10 tips to make DIY mani-pedis look professional
Sure nothing’s more relaxing than a salon nail session but you can save moolah and time by embracing some sneaky DIY manicure-pedicure tips for professional results. We begged some nail enthusiasts for their tried and tested tips for professional results. Now you can spend all the money saved on that handbag you’ve been eyeing forever!
Making a mess of your cuticles when you paint your nails?
Just apply a light layer of cuticle oil (or hand cream) around your cuticles and the sides of nails before you polish. The lacquer won’t stick on skin and wiping it off with a Q tip soaked in remover will be a breeze.
Impossible to get glitter polish off?
That’s the reason you avoid wearing glitter nail polishes. Well now you won’t! Just soak a cotton pad in nail polish remover and then wrap it around the nail in aluminum foil to prevent evaporation. Wait for a couple of minutes, twist off and poof, the stubborn glitter is gone!
Polish perfection for the butterfingered
This one’s for messy gals. Cut a few half circles in a visiting or greeting card. Place the finger you’re going to paint into the half circle, inserting the card a little under the edge of your nail. Now paint the nail surface without getting it on your skin. This also works beautifully for short nailed gals.
Smooth out bumps in glitter polish
Hate the grainy feel of glitter nail polish? Instead of furtively scraping at the bumps, just smooth over the rough surface with a coat or two of clear paint. Then add a layer of top coat. Done!
Can’t get your nail polish bottle to open?
Sometimes if you haven’t used a bottle in a while the cap can get stuck to the bottle. Don’t break a nail trying to pries it open. Just dunk it in a glass of warm water and let the laws of physics do the rest!
For the smoothest polish application ever
Wondered how salon pros get a perfect coat on in just three strokes? It’s simple really; place the end of the brush in the middle of the nail, just above the cuticle (where the blue line is). Gently wriggle the brush right up to the cuticle (the yellow squiggle), to color the nail right up to the cuticle. Now pull the brush along the nail (green arrow), repeating the process on the sides with the extra polish on the brush. Don’t dip the brush in the bottle between strokes on each nail because this will cause a polish overload.
Clean up polish mistakes quickly, cleanly
Forget Q tips soaked in remover that leaves lint on freshly painted nails. Buy a cheap eye liner brush and dip it in remover to stiffen the tip to a point. Now just dip in remover and work around the polish to clean spills. Even works like a marvel under nail edges. Genius!
Bid split nails and ridges goodbye
Sadly all that calcium you’ve been downing isn’t doing a thing for your nails. Instead reach for a biotin supplement to make your nails stronger and longer. Two independent studies have shown that Biotin thickens weak nails and reduces splitting in just eight weeks!
Get perfect cuticles without cutting skin
Straight from the mouth of experts! NEVER cut your cuticles! Instead use a thumbnail to gently push cuticles back to remove any excess. And don’t forget to keep them moisturized. At night massage hands and nails with a thick hand cream, the best way to hydrate cuticles.
Flaunt super soft hands
Here’s the perfect soft hand scrub-cum-moisturizer formula. Add a teaspoonful of sugar to some baby oil and massage into hands. Rinse off with tepid water for the smoothest, silkiest hands you’ll ever have. Told you it was easy!
