Spruce up your shaving routine and win fans.
Sizzling Desi Boyz actress Chitrangada Singh thinks clean shaven men are a big turn on. “I think it’s mostly clean shaven men who can sweep a woman off her feet with their charm,” she once said while promoting shaving brand Gillette’s ‘No Shave, No Lipstick’ movement. Former Femina Ms. India Neha Dhupia agrees wholeheartedly. “A clean-shaven guy is always preferable, attractive and creates a good impression. An unshaven person looks roguish,” she adds with a toss of her flowing mane. “Now if only Abhishekh Bachchan and Hrithik Roshan would get rid of their stubble.”
There’s plenty of research to back up these ladies. A recent study concluded that women rated the clean shaven look more highly than layers of stubble, saying facial hair made men look older, aggressive and untidy. Of course rare is the guy who doesn’t want an occasional breather from a morning shave routine but for the most part, shaving your face is a fundamental part of being a man. Almost like a rite of passage from adolescence to manhood. Since you’re likely to be doing it for four or more decades of your life, check out the five steps that will banish rough, razor bumps and guarantee a clean shave and healthier, happier skin.
Shower first, shave later
A common mistake many men make is shaving BEFORE they shower. If you do too, stop! Have a warm shower and just before stepping out, soak your face in warm water for a moment or two. Nykaa recommends using an all-in-one product like Gillette All Over Clean Hair + Body Wash or Nivea For Men Pure Impact Shower Gel. Run a towel over your head and the rest of your body but let your face stay wet. This will keep your stubble soft and easy to swipe off once you get that shaving gel on.
Choose your shaving gel with care.
Furtively scrubbing on some bathing soap or shower gel as a precursor to a shave is a no-no. Give your routine a kick start by picking a shaving gel depending on your skin type. Shaving gels are especially designed to reduce friction between the trust shaver and your skin. To get the biggest bang for your buck, apply a thick coat of gel on your face and gently massage it into your skin. Use too little and you run the risk of skin irritation. Sensitive skins do well with L’Oreal Paris Men Expert Shaving Gel. Meanwhile check out Park Avenue Sliver Shaving Foam if you have oily skin and Nivea Extra Moisture Shaving Foam if your skin feels dry, tight and stretched after your morning stubble fix.
Figure out the right shaving tool
That you have to use a razor is a no-brainer. But which kind? Typically you have two options, traditional razor or an electric razor. Disposable traditional razors are highly avoidable because they usually have poor quality blades that hurt skin long-term. Always pick a traditional razor like Braun Shaver SERIES-7, 730 or Gillette Fusion ProGlide Normal Razor Trimmer if you have sensitive skin or thick hair.
These razors allow you to change blades on a regular basis, and you should, every ten days or so. Electric razors like Remington EP6020 2 In 1 Corded Epilator and Braun Shaver SE5 590 3 CC2 don’t provide as close a shave as a typical razor but cause less skin irritation. Look for a model with a flexible head that moves with the contours of your face to give you a comfortable, nick-free shave.
Leave the tricky bits for last
After applying shaving gel all over, tackle easy bits like your cheeks and below the sideburns first because these are relatively flat surfaces and easier to shave. Then move to the trickier, curved bits like the area between your lips and nose, across your chin and around your ears. Leaving these spots to the end allows the gel enough time to soften hairs in these areas. Save your angst for later, hacking roughly at troublesome spots will only inflame skin. Always use gentle, light strokes for a smooth finish.
Salve on post shave gel.
Forget what your dad taught you. Applying a regular after-shave balm directly to your freshly shaved skin can leave you red faced because of the high alcohol content. If you have to, use a brand like Terrake Energising After Shave Balm or VLCC Men’s Active Light After Shave Balm. Better still, check out the slew of post-shave gels like Dermalogica Post Shave Balm, Park Avenue Good Morning After Shave Lotion and Nike Urban Musk After Shave Lotion. These are specially formulated to soothe irritation and moisturize freshly saved skin.
Then prepare to sweep your woman off her feet with your presence and charm, just the way Chitrangada would like it.
