Eight makeup shades for all skin tones
Zesty, timeless hues to warm up the cooler.
With summer heat and squelchy monsoon madness behind us, it’s time to experiment with color. To make it even easier for you, Nykaa has put together eight makeup shades that look stunning on ALL skin tones. As Nykaa makeup expert and celeb stylist Ojas Rajani says, “There’s no hard and fast rule about the colors you can wear whether you’re fair or dusky.” It’s time to forget old color-skin tone rules and experiment. “The trick is how cleverly you combine shades to carry them off with élan,” he points out.
The reign of purple eye shadow.
Forget staid pastel summery tints. Make a crackling statement with royal purple in its entire splendor. “Jewel tones are trending everywhere you look, from faces, clothes, bags and shoes,” says Rajani. Purple is a gorgeous blend of red and blue, complementing all skin tones and works beautifully for day and night. Just stay away from purples that are heavy on red-maroon undertones. Apply it incorrectly and it will look like a bruise! Check out Deborah Hi-Tech Trio Eye Shadow (Shade 2, 5), L’Oreal Paris Infallible Monos Eye Shadow (Shade 13), Maybelline Diamond Glow Eye Shadow (Shade Lilac Mauve) or Lakme Absolute Eye Color Baked Shadow (Shade Night Desire).
Dab on some peachy blush
“Peachy, burnt pink verging on coral with a hint of shimmer is a versatile color,” says Rajani, lighting up every skin tone. The punchy pink adjusts to your skin for a natural finish. Coral doesn’t contain red nor yellow undertones so it contrasts well with all skin tones to instantly perk up your looks.
Just use a lighter touch if you are fair skinned and go heavier on sallow, wheatish complexions. If you’re fair dust it lightly on the apples of your cheeks while dusky gals should use it to higher up on the cheekbones to add definition. Give Lakme Absolute Moon-Lit Highlighter, Maybelline Dream Touch Blush (Shade 5) or Street Wear Stay On Blush (Shade Peach Satin) a try.
Treat your eyes to some blues
“Take your pick of a dazzling array of eyeliners in countless shades of blue from turquoise and sapphire to cobalt and royal blue. Combine these with loads of mascara and you’re guaranteed to turn heads,” says Rajani. The best way to wake up your eyes no matter what your skin tone.
Use a pencil or cream liner for better definition. To grab attention, use a turquoise liner and accentuate it applying it in a thick, unapologetic tick to create blue cat eyes. Nykaa loves L’Oreal Paris Superliner Luminizer Eye Liner (Shade Blue), Revlon ColorStay Liquid Eyeliner (Shade Bingo blue), Revlon Grow Luscious Lash Liner (Shade Emerald) and Lakme Fantasy Shimmer Liner (Shade Glimmer Blue)
Golden shadow Cleopatra style
This is one metallic shade that looks stunning on dark eyes. It’s a universally flattering color and the easiest ways to enhance your peepers. All you need is a light dusting of golden shimmer to make your eyes pop. Try the whole gamut from bronze gold to one with a pearly finish.
Matte gold can look chalky on dusky skins so keep it light on the lids or apply as a subtle highlight under the brows. The dictum to remember: ‘Less is more’ so think glimmer, not glitter. Nykaa recommends Lakme Absolute Eye Color Baked Shadow (Shade Day Shimmer), Maybelline Diamond Glow Eye Shadow (Shade Copper Brown) or Maybelline Color Tattoo 24Hr Cream Gel Shadow (Shade Fierce and Tangy).
Flaunt red lips
Nykaa makeup expert and stylist to the stars Namrata Soni insists that there’s a perfect red for everyone. “Once you’ve figured out your undertone, it’s easy to find ‘your’ red and recreate some old world Hollywood glam.” She says that contrary to popular perception, red shouldn’t be relegated for nights’ out only and can easily be sported as a stain or tint for daytime wear.
“For cool undertones (read wheatish-yellow skinned gals) blue based shades such as cranberry or wine work well while blue-based reds flatter women with fairer, pink or rosy skin tones. Meanwhile, women with warm undertones (dusky skins) look good in orange based red shades such as brick reds. Check out Revlon Colorstay Ultimate Suede Lipstick (Shades Trendsetter, Couture), Lakme Absolute Matte Lipstick (Shades Desert Dune, Classic Rose) and L’Oreal Paris Colour Riche Intense Lipstick (Shades Passion Red Cheryl and Burning Sunset) to find your red.
Add a sun kissed glow with bronzer
Most girls are wary of using a bronzer because they think it’ll make them look darker. Actually products like NYX Professional Makeup Sculpt & Highlight Face Duo are the perfect way of highlighting, sculpting and warming up the complexion.
They come with the tiniest hint of shimmer and are versatile enough to work with all skin tones. Depending on your skin tone wear it in different ways. Dusky girls should use it like a highlighter, dusting it lightly on cheekbones, nose and chin, while wheatish and fair skin tones can dust everywhere the sun naturally hits: temples, cheeks and chin. Best of all, it works well as an eye shadow too.
Treat your lips to rosy lip gloss
Rose is a pretty, happy and versatile shade that can liven up your pout no matter what your skin tone. As Rajani says, “Indian skins look lovely in shades of corally pinks, champagne, and burnt rose.
”It’s hard to go wrong with a rosy pink lip gloss because it looks like most people’s natural lip color. If your lips are darker so with a semi-sheer glossy formula that offers a touch of color. Take your pick of L’Oreal Paris Glam Shine Gloss 6 Hr (Shades Always Pink, Perennial Rose), Lakme Absolute Gel Stylist Lip Gloss (Shade Neon Pink) and Revlon Super Lustrous Lip Gloss (Shades Pink after Glow and Wild about Violet). The perfect way to get sheer color and amazing shine in just one swipe.
Kajal, the ultimate gehna for your eyes
Get ready to smolder. Creamy, pigmented kohl is all you need to create the ultimate smudged and smoky effect. An absolute beauty essential that enhances all skin types, there’s no escaping the lure of kajal or kohl. As Rajani says, “It’s the timeless gehna that looks gorgeous on all skin types and eye shapes.
”Apply it anyway you like, either along the waterline or along your upper lash line, smudged or in a thin precise line. When using a kajal pencil like Lakme Eyeconic Kajal, Maybelline the Collosal Kajal or L’Oreal Paris Color Riche Le Kohl, always start from the outer corners of your eyes working inwards. Make sure to take short strokes and don’t shy away from pressing the pencil on the waterline. Thicken the line to create an intense, smoldering gaze.
