Unsafe fashions that do more harm than good
It’s fun to stay up-to-date with the latest fashion and beauty trends. Switching and mixing up styles is highly recommended but there are some beauty trends that are downright scary, others actually harmful. Nykaa has put together a list of five kooky, damaging trends that aren’t for the timid….or sane.
Keratin straightening systems
Long poker straight tresses are gorgeous and the last few years have seen Keratin treatments also called Brazilian Straightening become the go-to solution for women with curly, frizzy, coarse or unmanageable hair. However, this therapy is fraught with risks.
Why it’s scary
Earlier this year, two of the biggest manufacturers of the treatment issued a warning about the carcinogenic effects of formaldehyde gas that is emitted when the product is mixed.Straightening products rely on formaldehyde, ammonia and other toxic chemicals to open hair cuticles and infuse the keratin protein into strands. Formaldehyde is linked to lung cancer and leukemia.
Safer alternatives include shampoos and conditioners designed to give you sleek, straight locks. Check out hair products like Sunsilk Straight Lock Shampoo and Sunsilk Straight Lock Conditioner. Then use Remington S7902 Wet2 Straight Slim Hair Straightener or Denman Hair Straightening Iron for a straight, super-smooth finish.
Fish Spa Pedicures
This new spa treatment sounds trendy and fun. Dunk your feet in a tub of water as toothless carp, also called ‘Doctor Fish” nibble away at callouses and dead skin, leaving your feet silky soft and smooth.
Why it’s scary
Reports suggest that these tiny fish carried a diverse range of bacteria, some of which are capable of causing soft tissue damage. Bacterial strains like Vibrio vulnificus, Vibrio cholera and Streptococcus agalactiae can cause wound infections, septicemia and pneumonia that can be fatal in people suffering from liver disease, diabetes or a depressed immune system. What’s worse, research suggests these bacteria are resistant to most antibiotics.
Give yourself a relaxing—and safe—home pedicure with the latest range of mani-pedi sets. Nykaa loves OPI’s Manicure Pedicure Green Tea Soak. Follow that up with a good scrub. Nykaa recommends using a Vega Pedicure File with a foot scrub like OPI Manicure Rejuvenating Scrub to remove dirt and dry skin. Then treat cuticles and nails to a restorative moisturizing session with Sally Hansen Cuticle Massage Cream and finish up by painting your pinkies with a polish from the Lakme, OPI, L’Oreal or Colorbar ranges.
Brazilian Bikini Waxes
The quest to be all-over hairless has reached new heights. However this hair-free craze is not without its ouch moments.
Why it’s scary
Waxing pubic hair creates microscopic tears in delicate skin that makes it easy to pick up infections, either from bacteria that breed in this moist, covered area or from sexually transmitted diseases. Moreover, ingrown hairs, another common problem, can cause bumps and painful abscesses.
There’s no dearth of hair removal options that are less painful and risky. Use one of many hair removal products available today, such as Braun shavers, Veet Wax Strips or depilatory creams like Anne French. Meanwhile depilators are the ideal hair removal option for girls with a low pain threshold. Check out the Braun range of epilators with silk-épil technology and 20 tweezer system to enjoy smooth skin for weeks.
Wearing circle lenses
Contact lenses that create the illusion of bigger, wider, startled eyes are all the rage in Japan. Widely available online and favored by pop stars like Lady Gaga to create a doe-like gaze, circle contact lenses are popular with the young and fashion conscious. That the lenses have received cult status is evident by the fact that when makeup artist Michelle Phan did a step-by-step video on how to use them, the video received 9.5 million hits!
Why it’s scary
The fact that their manufacture is not regulated has experts warning that these lenses can lead to a range of visual problems, including serious eye injuries and blindness. Like other contact lenses, prolonged use without regular breaks can cause scratches on the cornea, especially if they are fitted too tightly or loosely. Experts say vision loss within 24 hours of trying a pair is not uncommon. Scarily colored lenses are equally tacky and creepy, best reserved for Halloween scare fests.
You can get a sexy stare in so many safer ways. Try different eye makeup styles such as the cat eye and smoky eyes. Pick up an eye-shadow palette like Revlon Illuminance Cream Shadow or Deborah Eye Design Quad Eye Shadow and get to work. Grab eyeballs by layering at least two shades of eye shadow. Experiment at will; try mixing a cool gray with a dark blue; or a soft peach with deep purple. For more, check out eye makeup tutorials on Nykaa eye makeup for brown eyes and black smoky eyes
Plumped up pouts
Angelina Jolie’s luscious lips set off a trend with every woman making a beeline to her dermatologist to get her pucker pumped up. Look around. Luscious bee stung lips seem to be a hot trend for everyone from Bollywood divas Kangana Ranaut and Shahzaan Padamsee to Priyanka Chopra.
Why it’s scary
Lip fillers are very big right now but surgical augmentation is an expensive and dangerous option, often producing unnatural results. Most lip plumpers work by increasing the amount of collagen in the lips to plump up your pout. Bruising, lumps and an unnatural shape are common side effects. Infections, tissue loss and allergic reactions have also been reported.
Give lip plumpers like Sally Hansen Lip Inflation Plumping Treatment a try. Temporary plumpers contain mild irritants like ginger and cinnamon that stimulate lips, causing them to swell and look plumper. The only side effect is a mild irritation and tingling that subsides. Here’s an easy way to look painlessly beautiful.
