Go from flab to fab like Sonam
Want to don a bikini? Turn your dream into reality.
There was a time when she was a clunky, bespectacled teen. Going from a heaving 86 kilos to a sultry hourglass 56 when she shot for her debut film, Saawariya, Sonam successfully transformed from fat to fit. Need more proof? Check out this fashionista’s killer bikini bod in her latest film Bewakoofiyan. It’s not been easy transformation for this self-confessed foodie whose love for ice cream and chocolate is legendary. Today, she’s a big fan of the low-carb high protein diet and five small meals-a-day theory. Living on fruits, oatmeal, high protein egg whites, dry fruit, grilled chicken and fish, and loads of veggies, Sonam has proved beyond doubt that you can lose weight without losing your looks. Nykaa has put together a fat torching plan that will help you lose five kilos in one month. More good news: no starvation, diet pills, weight loss supplements and fad diets. Check out the exercise and diet strategies below and pick the ones that fit your lifestyle best.
Up your liquid intake, and no, that doesn’t mean more alcohol
Summer days scream for a chilled margarita or gin and tonic. But remember that a spiked energy drink, smoothie or wine has at least 100 calories a pop. Since liquid calories rarely fill you up, they’re a waste. Instead, guzzle pure aqua, the zero calorie ultimate thirst quencher. Moreover, it’ll flush out toxins, reduce bloating, clear your skin and jumpstart your metabolism. Aim for two to three liters per day. Find plain water boring? Add a sprig of pudina leaves or a slice of lemon to spice things up. Research also suggests having a shot of java just before your workout boosts your performance, so that you burn more calories during your workout.
Bye bye bread
And pasta, noodles, rice, sandwiches, rolls and rice. All simple carbs cause bloating in the short term and settle around your hips in the long term. “Since simple carbs get digested so quickly that they cause rebound hunger, making you snack in between meals,” says wellness expert Naini Setalvad. For a month try replacing carbs with vegetables instead. Instead of a chicken wrap have a stir fried chicken with veggies. Substitute a paneer sandwich with paneer tikka and a bowl of salad. Vegetables contain complex carbs and fiber so you stay full for longer. Besides they have far fewer calories than simple carbs. That’s not to say you can never eat a roti again. When you’ve lost the five kilos, add an occasional whole grain roti or brown rice to your meal.
Work off the fat
Without following a healthy food regime it’s impossible to lose weight even if you work out like a fiend. However, regular workouts—spinning, brisk walking, jogging or swimming—can up your heart rate and metabolism so that you burn calories faster. Aim to burn 200 calories in 30 minutes and workout for an hour every day. Intersperse high intensity spurts with short breaks at a slower speed to burn lard faster. In one month your arms, legs and middle will look and feel toned and tight. For instance, Sonam followed a rigorous workout routine for a year including weight training, yoga and Pilates, squeezing in squash and swimming when she got the chance. The result: in one year she lost a whopping 30 kg!
Get 30 extra minutes of zzzs
Whatever your regular sleep routine, start adding an extra half hour to your snooze session. You’ll be surprised at the difference it’ll make to your outlook. You will not just get up feeling more awake, you will make healthier food choices and be more regular at the gym as well. Ideally, try and get seven to eight hours every night. Remember your body and skin repairs itself while your rest; that’s one more reason for getting more sleep.
At the end of four weeks, not only will clothes fit better but you’ll feel more in control. Though Sonam has lost all the weight she needs to and can eat just about anything she wants to, she continues to follow her healthy routine, only very occasionally sneaking a cheat treat. And so will you!
