Strand styles to wow up every hair length
Get the skinny on sporting the perfect coiffure .
She’s the secret behind the pretty pinkies sported by top Bollywood actress from Kareena Kapoor, Sushmita Sen and Karisma Kapoor to Priyanka Chopra and Twinkle Khanna. Gel nail specialist and owner of the Glory Salons in Mumbai, Teresa Chen is also a hair stylist par excellence. She specializes in styling and dressing the tresses of brides, Page Three types and the well turned out girl-next-door. “There’s no dearth of hair styles you can create no matter what your hair length,” she says with a toss of her impeccable shoulder length bob. “All you need is loads of creativity and clever use of hair products to style your strands into hairstyles that not just you, but all your friends will fall in love with!”
Flaunt worthy short hair styles .
Short hair can range from ear skimming, nape hugging styles to chin length hair. “Short hair,” says Chen “needs to be deep conditioned every time you shampoo.” Use a rich conditioner that fights frizz and breakage. If your hair tends to fluff up, you might want to try a leave in conditioner and a strong hold gel for the perfect mix of control and conditioning. Fine haired gals should try a pixie or short bob cut to give the illusion of thicker hair. If you’re blessed with thick, straight hair, opt for a layered bob because it gives hair texture and thins out ends so they it doesn’t puff out toward the edges. Nykaa suggests Tresemme Keratin Smooth Infusing Shampoo, L’Oreal Paris Smooth Intense Conditioner, TIGI Bed Head Colour Goddess Leave-In Conditioner and Kaya Hair Health Gel.
Chen says that short haired gals should allow hair to air dry because frequent blow drying increases flyaways and frizziness. “Air dry after touching up with a serum to control frizz,” she says. However, if you want to keep your short hair poker straight run a texture cream through the ends of strands and flat iron tips to keep them straight and shiny. Alternately you could curl them slightly at the tips to create some texture.
“A bob can look chic when paired with eye skimming bangs,” says Chen. She points out that a fringe can update any hairstyle, but tends to look best on those with thicker hair. “If your hair is thin, your bangs may appear sparse and stringy rather than full.” Meanwhile, layered and one-length cuts work perfectly on wavy haired gals since such hair tends to hang looser and longer. Short, curly hair looks best in a softly layered style. “This will give your hair volume all over instead of just at the ends,” says Chen, adding that for an Indianized look, use some bobby pins to pin up little sections of hair and twist them back to leave the ends sticking out to create a messy updo effect.
Wear your shoulder length hair with pride .
This is the most versatile length of hair, Chen proclaims. “It’s that perfect hair length that doesn’t fall too long or hang too short; it’s the style you should opt for when you’re sick of long hair but not ready to commit to a bob just yet.” A popular look since the ’80s, the key to the perfect shoulder length cut lies in its length; it can’t be too long or too short, and looks perfect when it just skims the collarbone. “The ends should be texturized not blunt so that there is plenty of movement in the style.” Get it right and your hair will be swingy yet sexy, long enough and edgy enough to stand apart from a sea of beachy waves everywhere you look.
“Style it by cutting it in layers, tying it up in a ponytail or updo, decorating it with flowers or simply blow-drying the lower half into curls for an evening out,” Chen suggests. Another style that works well for festive occasions is separating it into two sections; making a braid with the top half and weaving that around a low bun made from the lower section of hair. All you need is a shine-boosting shampoo and conditioner to get a little extra gloss, and a volumizer spray to create body. Nykaa suggests L’Oreal Paris Nutri-Gloss Shampoo, Dove Daily Shine Shampoo 650ml, Dove Daily Shine Conditioner, Tresemme Smooth & Shine Conditioner and FX Brazilian Smooth Keratin Blowout Cream.
Make the most of long, waist length tresses .
While there’s no dearth of options here, it can sometimes become tedious to think up ways of perking up long hair. The number one rule, says Chen, is keep long hair healthy and shiny by getting regular trims and treating your strands to a hair mask or moisturizing conditioner once a week because long hair is prone to breakage. Don’t want to sacrifice length but want to refresh your look? “Blunt bangs and beachy ombré highlights are the best way to perk up your look without sacrificing length,” says Chen. Or recreate Kate Middleton’s bouncy blowout with a styling cream, a blow dryer and round brush. The trick here is not to get too hung up on taming flyways. “A soft, slightly undone texture looks pretty and chic,” says Chen. Nykaa suggests L’Oreal Paris Fall Repair 3x Masque, Schwarzkopf Spa Essence Hydrating Cream Mask, Organix Smooth Hydration Argan Oil & Shea Butter Moisture Restore Mask, Schwarzkopf Bonacure Moisture Spray Conditioner, Palmer’s Olive Oil Formula Conditioning Spray Oil, Paul Mitchell Quick Slip and Philips HP8216 Kerashine Dryer.
Can’t be bothered with blow drying and styling? “Just create a side pony tail that looks very stylish and glamorous with both Indian and Western wear,” suggests Chen, adding that the classic high bun hairstyle is another quick and easy look that works for both cocktails and wedding receptions. “Bend at the waist and hang your head downwards to gather it up in a ponytail. Stand upright, brush hair out and wrap it into a bun, securing with bobby pins.” You could decorate this updo with flowers or leave wisps of hair hanging down in front of the ears for a classic messy updo. She points out that the messy low bun is another popular hairdo that’s perfect for mid length to long hair.
