The revamped BB Cream—the CC cream—is here. Think of BB creams pumped up to color and correct with hardworking anti-ageing ingredients added on for good measure. Riding on the popularity of multi-tasking BB skincare creams that moisturized, sun protected and corrected, now comes the CC cream, also called the color or complexion correcting formula. Like BB creams they include sunscreen and moisturizers but thanks to higher concentration of pigment, the new innovation does away with the ‘ashy’ finish of its predecessor. Late last year, Chanel and Olay were among the first international brands to sign on and retail CC creams exclusively in China and US respectively, with others like Peter Roth, Smashbox, Clinique, Ponds and Lakme also jumping into the fray.

As Nykaa skincare expert Ambika Bhavnani explains, “If I told you the BB Creams were the equivalent of tinted moisturizers like Olay Total Effects Touch of Foundation SPF 15 then CC creams are twin sisters of full coverage foundations like L'Oreal Paris Matte Morphose Foundation with the added benefits of skincare.” To be worn after applying moisturizer, instead of your usual foundation, CCs are an inspired new approach to base make-up, providing a sheer coverage that evens out annoying redness and dullness.

Add to that a bunch of skin loving vitamins, carefully selected skin plumping and hydrating peptides and a radiance-boosting complex and you'll wonder how you ever possibly managed without it. Nykaa shopper Sunayana Talwar who bought the Olay Regenerist CC Cream Complexion Corrector on her last trip overseas swears by the formulation. “It’s more like a tinted serum, smooth and easy to apply. I never thought my skin would glow like this.” She says a CC cream is the skin cover-up you should get if you’re looking for a product that evens out skin tone, reduces the appearance of dark spots, sun spots and post acne marks and pigmentation. “I’ve junked my usual foundation,” says a delighted Talwar. “When you have a lightweight three-in-one formula that gives complete coverage and works as a primer, perfector and skin tone corrector all rolled into one, you don’t need anything else.”

Different formulations also address diverse concerns. A runaway hit, the Peter Thomas Roth CC Cream Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Complexion Corrector and the Payot Hydra 24 Complex boast anti-ageing benefits thanks to the presence of Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF) that stimulate collagen production in the skin and speed up regeneration. Meanwhile Smashbox's Camera Ready CC Cream Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Dark Spot Correcting (available in five shades) is primarily a dark spot corrector and fades imperfections, evens out the complexion, and prevents future discoloration.
• Manna for dry skin
On the other hand, Clinique's Moisture Surge CC Cream Hydrating Colour Corrector Broad Spectrum SPF 30 is manna for dry skin, ensuring deep hydration and smoothening out the complexion, creating an unbelievable radiance, correcting dullness, sallowness and redness. The L'Oreal Visible Lift CC Cream, available in a Light/Medium and Medium/Deep with an SPF 20 broad spectrum in built sunscreen brightens skin, evens out skin tone. Finally, the Olay Total Effects 7-in-1 CC Cream gently exfoliates while providing tons of moisture and UV protection. The only downside is that that the CC creams can leave the skin looking a bit flat. Remedy that by topping with a luminous cream blush or highlighter.
