Makeup Czarina Namrata Soni decodes lip colors.
Official beauty expert with L’Oreal Paris, Namrata Soni has spent a lifetime glamming up film stars and models to make them look their stylish best. The super modest and petite Soni is the first to admit that she isn’t flawless herself. But she has a few tricks up her sleeve. “I use these ruses myself to make my lips look bigger,” she says. The first step though is to know all the different ways you can use color on your lips.
Lip stains to the rescue!.
If you’re tired of touching up your lipstick all the time, lip stains are the way to go. They’re smudge-proof and waterproof. Depending on the brand, your lips can look pretty (and colored) for up to six hours. There’s a host of colors to choose from. The formulation ensures that your pout looks full and feels smooth. “It’s also the cheat’s way of showing off ‘naturally’ pink lips,” Soni says with a twinkle. Tinted lip balms rule.
Present day tinted lip balms are nothing like the lip balms we used as kids. The newcomers are crayon-shaped in a rainbow array of colors. They’re ultra-hydrating, chubby and cute. Depending on the brand you can get lighter or darker coverage for a more natural or dramatic look. Lip hydration and color without the stickiness of lipstick! “My favorite,” declares Soni, “is Maybelline Baby Lips Balm.” Also try Maybelline Baby Lips Electro Pop and Maybelline Lip Smooth Color Bloom.
The glossy, shiny lippie.
Enter Lip Gloss. The perfect cover up for the girl who loves a shiny glossy lip. It provides a glossy luster with a subtle flush of color. It’s like sprinkling diamond dust on lips. “Camouflage thin lips under a layer of gloss for instantly luscious lips,” says Soni. Lip gloss can come in many variants; completely clear, translucent, frosted, glittery, glossy or in metallic finishes. “Glosses can give an illusion of bigger lips and it looks super glamorous. For a pouty lip, just add a little in the center of your top and bottom lip and then smack them together.” Check out Maybelline Color Sensational High Shine Lip Gloss and Max Factor Vibrant Curve Effect Lip Gloss.
Retro style with Lip Crayons .
If you want lip color busting with vibrant color and hydration then buy a lip crayon today! They typically have a melting formula that leaves a radiant veil of color on lips with just enough shine and moisture to make each shade come alive. “It’s ideal for the retro girl who loves the classic look of a matte lip with a super glide formula and long lasting color. It just slides on and stays out,” says Soni. Nykaa recommends L’Oreal Glam Shine Lip Crayon and Bourjois Colour Boost Lip Crayon.
The hybrid matte gloss stain.
This is the ultimate goodness-in-a-tube like nothing you’ve ever used before. It stains your lip for hours in a matte finish and comes in the brightest rainbow array of colors you can imagine. “The best product to draw a slightly-fuller lip,” says Soni. “Fill in your entire top and bottom lip with a matte pencil. The easiest way is to play connect the dots using a lip pencil. (Nykaa recommends Bourjois Lip Pencil). On your top lip, draw a dot at the tops and bottom of your cupid’s bow and at the corners. Then draw lines to connect them. On your bottom lip, draw dots at each corner and two in the center, then connect those as well. Finish by filling in the entire lip with the formula.” Nykaa likes Lakme 9 To 5 Matte Lip Color.
