On the red carpet at the Oscars
The 86th Academy Awards celebrated the ‘Heroes of Hollywood’.
From the start it was a spectacle with a difference. Shunning the traditional song and dance routine, host Ellen DeGeneres with the impossibly blue eyes took plenty of selfies of her own reaction to the star studded audience that included the likes of Brangelina, Meryl Streep and Leonardo DiCaprio. Unsurprisingly, 12 Years A Slave, a story about slavery in the United States won three Oscars; for Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress (won by newcomer Lupita Nyong’o) and Best Adapted Screenplay (John Ridley). Another big winner was the lost-in-space thriller Gravity that won seven Oscars; with director Alfonso Cuaron becoming the first Latin American filmmaker to win in this category. Other Gravity Oscars included Original Score, Cinematography, Editing, Visual Effects, Sound Mixing and Sound Editing.
Matthew McConaughey and Cate Blanchett expectedly won top honors for Best Actor and Actress. McConaughey won for his role as hard-drinking homophobe who finds out he has AIDS in Dallas Buyers Club. Meanwhile Jared Leto who played a HIV positive transgender picked up one for Supporting Actor. Blanchet tearned hers for her portrayal as a mentally troubled woman in Blue Jasmine. “Films with women as the main characters are not niche, and in fact, they make money!” the Australian actress declared to a standing ovation. Meanwhile new girl in town Lupita, bornin Mexico, raised in Kenya, tearfully, said, “Every time I look down at this golden statue, may it remind me and every little child that no matter where you’re from, your dreams are valid.”
Frozen and The Great Gatsby each scored two trophies. Frozen won Animated Feature Film and Best Song, for Let It Go. Catherine Martin went home with two trophies for the 1920s Jazz Age romantic drama The Great Gatsby, directed by her husband Baz Luhrmann. She won for costume design and shared the second, for production design, with set decorator Beverley Dunn. However, it was a disappointing night for the con comedy American Hustle, which entered the ceremony with no less than ten nominations. The other moment of note was when host Ellen DeGeneres managed to break Twitter during the show broadcast on ABC.Twitter faltered and near collapsed when she rounded up some of Hollywood’s biggies for a selfie in the hopes of setting a reTweet record. Indeed, her down to earth, friendly vibe was like a breath of fresh air. Ever heard of a host who orders pizzas for her ‘starving for the big day’ invitees? DeGeneres did.
