Rock the bold red lip trend
The scarlet pout just refuses to fade away .
There’s a fearless vibe about red. Deepika Padukone sizzles in it. So does the vivacious Anushka Sharma and the ethereally pretty Asin. Katrina Kaif, Kareena Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor wear it with scorching perfection, while Aishwarya Rai Bachchan sports it with practiced ease. Finally how can anyone forget the perennial diva Rekha of the golden kanjeevarams and luscious crimson pout?
Sophisticated and sultry.
It’s a look that’s at once sophisticated and sultry. Kareena Kapoor has outdone the trend on multiple occasions, whether it’s the red carpet, promotional events or films such as Heroine and Talaash. Deepika Padukone too rocked this retro chic look not just in Cocktail but most recently in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani besides countless fashion shows. As she confesses, “I’m a big fan of bright red lipstick! Wish I could wear it all the time, especially paired with liner.” Another red girl is the effervescent Alia Bhatt who debuted in the smash hit Student Of The Year and stole hearts with her cute button nose and bright red-lips.
Red is the new obsession
Bong bombshell Bipasha Basu is living testimony of the spunk a crimson pout can add to a dusky complexion. Whether it’s a stunning red pucker at the screening of Raaz 3 or Players, Basu rocks the trend.
By her own admission, “Hats and red lipstick are my new obsessions for summer.” Who could forget Vidya Balan’s sizzling performance in Dirty Picture where her cleavage-revealing blouses and red red lips stay with you long after the film ends. Finally no one epitomizes the Quintessential Diva meets Contemporary Style Goddess look like Sonam did with dramatic eyes and rouge lips at Cannes this year. It’s a look she carried with great effect at her 2012 Cannes outing too. As she says, “It’s a misconception that red is meant only for fair skin. Red can look very classy on typical Indian skin tones as well.”
What’s your undertone?
Nykaa expert Namrata Soni and L’Oreal Paris’ official makeup artist at Cannes ’13 says that while many women secretly crave to wear red they’re frightened they’ll end up looking loud, garish or worse.
The key, she points out, is figuring out ‘your’ red is. To do this you have to first figure out whether you have warm, cool or neutral undertones. “Stand in front of a well-lit mirror wearing a pure white towel or bath robe. Wrap your hair under a white towel. Drape another one over any furniture behind you because the more you’re surrounded with white, the easier it will be to see the colors hiding under the surface of your skin. Now what do you see? Does your skin look blueish? If so, you have cool undertones. If it looks yellowish, you have warm undertones, and if it’s greenish, you have neutral undertones.”
How to make your red last
Surprisingly it’s one of the easiest shades to take from day to night. We’ll show you how.
• Lip liners do more than define your lips. They’re your best ally to making color really pop. For lasting drama apply lip liner on prepped lips. They contain more pigment than traditional lipsticks. Just make sure it’s the same color as your lippie.
• After applying lipstick, keep blotting paper handy to dab at your lips. Then re-apply lipstick. This will keep the color fresh and vibrant.
• Use lipsticks that say Long Stay or Long Wear. Such formulas have longer staying power. However, since they tend to have a drying effect on lips, remember to use a lip balm beforehand.
• Lightly dust translucent powder over your lipstick to set the formula and prevent oil and spice in food from breaking down the lip color.
• Through the day, apply a coat of lip gloss whenever you feel the sheen wearing off. It’s the quickest way to add back some oomph!
Warm and cool reds
Now it’s a cakewalk to find the red to set your world alight! “Women with warm undertones—read olive, wheatish or easily tanned skins—look amazing in orange-based reds such as brick red.
We like L’Oreal Paris Color Riche Matte Lipstick – Cannes’13 Collection (shades 375, 377) and Lakme Absolute Matte Lipstick (shades 47, 66, 207). Cool undertones (fairer, rosier skinned girls) should opt for reds with a blue, violet or brown undertone (wine, cranberry or burgundy) Check out shades 812, 844, 816 and 925 of Maybelline Color Sensational Moisture Extreme Lipstick.
Neutral and dusky reds
Meanwhile, if you’re blessed with a neutral undertone count yourself lucky because you’ll look good in virtually any shade of red (or any other color for that matter). Give the reds from L’Oreal Paris Colour Riche Lipsticks made for Me, L’Oreal Paris Infallible Le Rouge Lipstick and Revlon Colorstay Ultimate Suede Lipstick a try. Dusky complexions look lovely in bright, warm and shiny coral lippies like shade 19 Revlon Plump Sexxxy Lipstick, shades 01 and 183 V Colorbar Velvet Matte Lipstick, and shade 12 Colorbar Creame Touch Lipstick.
You could also check out a blue-based cool shade of red as long as you’re carrying the cool tones through the rest of your makeup says Nykaa makeup expert Arhsis Javeri to give a chic modern twist to your makeup. Medium-to-dark skins fare well with deeper pinkish or orange poppy reds. Try deep reds, dark orangey shades or reds tinged with browns like Innocently Brown and Coco Liscious from Colorbar Full Finish Long Wear Lipstick. Steer clear of overly pink or violet reds
Reds for when in doubt
If you’re unsure about ‘your’ red stick to a berry tone or fuchsia like shade 36 Colorbar Creame Touch Lipstick and shade 002 Colorbar Diva Lipstick. Red in a see-though texture works like a dream for first timers still unsure of wearing their colors on their pouts. Try shade 80, 90 of Maybelline Color Sensational High Shine Lip Gloss or shade 6, 18 of Revlon ColorBurst Lip Gloss.
Get the rest right too.
Red lips are just the start. To show off the ravishing tint, the skin tone has to be simply perfect. Start with a moisturizing formula like L’Oréal Paris True Match Foundation and team it with a soft gold bronzer on the upper lids. Then line the water line with soft smudge kohl. We like Revlon Customeyes Shadow & Linerand Lakme Absolute Kohl Ultimate. Finish up by accentuated your peppers with liberal lashings of L’Oreal Paris Lash Architect 4D Mascara.
The only downside to a red—or any deep colored lippie—is that it tends to make your lips appear thinner, the same way dark clothes make you look slimmer. For a fuller pout outline lips with a lip liner and wear peachier, coral shades of red and top up with loads of gloss.
