Should you go black or green? Reap beauty benefits from one of the world’s favourite beverages.
The beauty virtues of green tea have been extolled in the media for a long time now. We’re happy to report that both green and black tea – essentially the same ingredient with different processing times – have excellent anti-oxidant properties. The secret to their appeal is an ingredient called catechins, which is found more in green tea than in black. “However, both type of teas help in increasing body metabolism and in reducing weight,” says consultant nutritionist Hena Nafis. Here’s how you can maximize the beauty potential of both these wonder ingredients:
Green Tea is rich in epigallocatechin gallate which is a powerful antioxidant and helps in killing cancer cells without affecting cell tissues. “Green tea has powerful anti-oxidants which fight against free radicals. It also lowers the risk of other cancers and prevents tooth decay. Having it with lemon, boosts its anti-oxidants properties,” says Naini Setalvad, nutritionist and health consultant. Green tea is also very beneficial for the skin. According to Setalvad, green tea is very soothing moisturizer and has superior anti-aging properties. She suggests you take three tablespoons of mayonnaise and one teaspoon of green tea leaves. Mix them well and apply it all over your face, leave it on for 15-20 minutes before washing off. This easy to do pack gives you a clean and smooth skin.
Black tea is very beneficial for hair. You just have to add 3-5 tea bags to one bowl of boiled water. Let this mixture rest for 4-5 hours. Apply it all over clean hair and leave it on for 30 minutes. This will condition your hair and will make it silky soft. Black tea has fluoride which is helpful in bone and oral health. It has other valuable ingredients like flavonoids which strengthens the immune system and guards your system from negatives. “Black tea helps relax and expand arteries which increase blood flow to the heart. According to research, black is more beneficial for heart attacks and strokes while green is more beneficial for certain types of cancer especially breast and prostate cancer,” sums up Setalvad.
Black tea is darker colour than green because it has a longer processing time
