Ten easy tips to look thinner in photos
She woke up like this!
Sonam Kapoor is blessed with the art of posing and preening for the shutterbugs in glam ensembles, no matter what the length, cut, type of the outfit! She flaunts her tall figure with elan, shows that she has got it all by her perfectly timed poses and pouts that highlight her gorgeously svelte figure. And now so can you!
We’ve all shrieked in horror at those party photos where we look three months pregnant? Whether it’s that time of the month, you’re wearing an unflattering cut or just a bad angle, fat photos can be a real downer. While you can’t always look flawless in pictures, these sneaky tips will definitely make you look slimmer and sexier. Read on!
Find your best angle
If you’re taking—or part of—a selfie, place the camera slightly above you, tilt your chin down and look up with your eyes. Since very few faces are symmetrical—supermodels being the exception to the rule—mere mortals like you and me should tilt our faces at a sight angle. And this is where your camera timer comes in handy. Holding your phone out, tilting your face and trying to push the camera button at the same time can get pretty complicated. Instead, prop your camera against something, hit the timer button, show the world your best side, and smile, smile, smile!
Stick your chin out
Supermodel Heidi Klum is a fan, as will you when you see the results. It might feel weird, but sticking your chin or head out slightly will banish any semblance of a dreaded double chin. Want your face to look thinner than it is? Simply put your tongue on the roof of your mouth while smiling. Instantly longer, slimmer face!
Put your forehand—the one closer to camera—on your side to make a triangular gap between your arm and your body. Holding your arm close to your body makes you look larger than you are. Now for your legs; place your toes together but heels apart to create a gap between your legs to make them look thinner. If you’re sitting down, cross your legs to lessen the surface area seen by the camera. Voila! Thinner in a flash!
Say no to below
Never ever let yourself be photographed from below. It’s the most unflattering angle possible because it instantly adds on kilos. Heads on works but the best shot is when the camera is slightly above you. Why? Because of the angle of the camera you’ll have to look up, automatically elongating your neck making your upper body look thinner.
Position yourself right
We spoke to celeb makeup stylist Ojas Rajani who styles umpteen brides and glam girls. And this is what she had to say, “The trick to looking slimmer is showing off less of you to the camera! Turn sideways so that less overall surface area can be seen.” Plant one foot in front of the other, point your toe to the camera and place your weight on your back foot. Simple!
Your posture is all important. Keep your back straight. Slouching will not just make you look shorter but make it look like you’ve packed on a few pounds around the middle.
Find good lighting
Smartphones can be pretty unforgiving when it comes to revealing every pore and laugh-line. Unless the sun is filtering gently at an angle, and you’re standing in a shaded area, sunlight is not your friend. Direct sunlight can make you squint which makes your jawline look more square. Stay as far as you can from being photographed with the harsh midday sun over your head or the bright lamp next to your computer. If you’re indoors, kill harsh fluorescent lighting and use natural light from a window to avoid glare. And whatever you do, don’t let yourself get photographed with backlighting.
If you know it’s going to be a big photo op day, avoid bloating foods in the day or days leading up. Lay off the booze and sodium-packed foods (chips, fries and junk food) and opt for lots of water, fruits and veggies. Not just will it make you look trimmer, it will reduce puffiness around the eyes and slim your face.
Wearing monochrome colors is a good way to go, as is shapewear. Well-fitting clothes can instantly slim you. A structured, waist defined blazer over a blouse or well-shaped skirt can create slimness. Try wearing a blouse and pant in the same color tone, and contrast with a boldly colored stole, blazer or scarf to create vertical lines down the center of your body that make you look slimmer.
Don’t yell cheese please!
Because that’s what kids do and it’s just silly. Also, because it makes you look like a chipmunk with puffy cheeks. Just smile naturally—after checking you don’t have some spinach stuck between your front teeth…
