The glam brigade is in the limelight once again .
There’s something irresistible about the IPL. Come April and May, stadiums and TV sets alight with the sound of thousands of adoring, cheering fans rooting for their heroes both on and off the pitch. Not just is their cricketing prowess food for fodder, but their more glamorous better halves have a cult following of their own. If there’s a woman behind every man, then you can be sure there’s a gorgeous woman trailing—even walking beside—these thrilling sporting heroes. While most of them gallantly acknowledge the role their more glamorous better halves play, we can’t deny the hotness quotient these gorgeous women bring to the game.
Brazilian beauty Izabelle
Leading the brigade is the exotic Brazilian beauty Izabelle Leite, current companion to Virat Kohli, middle order batsman, youth icon and face of numerous brands such as Toyota, Pepsi and Cinthol The jury is still out about whether or not they are together because Kohli has shied away from confirming the news even though the two have been spotted hand- in-hand strolling through upmarket shopping districts around the world. On her part Izabelle regularly tweets about matches and roots for India. They first met at an ad shoot in Singapore and since then, the beauty has shifted to Mumbai to make her film debut. Frequent trips to Delhi, Kohli’s hometown are also on the agenda.
Shaun Tait’s Mashoom
Explosive Aussie and Rajasthan Royal bowler Shaun Tait’s new found composure has much to do with his lady love’s calming influence, Indian model and businesswomen Mashoom Singha. The ubiquitous fashion darling with bee stung lips and a coquettish charm first came into prominence when she posed for the Kingfisher calendar in 2006, going in to star in many ad campaigns and fashion shows.
Tait and Mashoom met at IPL event in 2009 and have pretty much been inseparable since. Mashoom loves introducing Tait to Indian cuisine and culture as much as she enjoys walking the ramp. Tarun Tahiliani’s show stopper at the 2011 Aamby Valley Bridal Week as well as model of choice for countless designers from Rohit Bal and Anita Dongre to Manish Malhotra, Mashoom has also modeled for Reliance, Motorola, L’Oreal and Flying Machine. For now the loved up couple manage a long distance romance, Tait in Adelaide and Mashoom in Mumbai running an event management company along with her modeling assignments. Animal lover, vegetarian by choice, curious and positive, she loves travelling to exotic locales with Tait an avid rock climber. Mashoom follows a simple beauty routine that involves regular clean-ups and copious amounts of moisturizer.
The kohl-eyed Sakshi
Famous for her signature kohl-lined eyes and distinctive sartorial style, Sakshi was just 21 when she married Indian cricket czar M.S. Dhoni. She has learned to play the role of supportive wife to perfection, accompanying her husband on major tours.
A common sighting by the sidelines, Sakshi and Dhoni knew each other when they were children, meeting years later at a party hosted by actress Bipasha Basu in Aurangabad, sparking a romance that culminated with a rushed, private wedding in Dehradun, Sakshi’s hometown. Clearly the pretty girl is Chennai Super Kings most stylish mascot, combining quirky fashion with diva style. Hers is a fashion sense that has evolved over the last six IPLs. At the latest outings, sporting bold neon lips, geeky glasses and neon print dresses, Sakshi looks every bit the effortless style icon she is. Her enamored husband agrees.
Exotic Ayesha steals the show
If Sakhsi is at one end of the girlie spectrum, the newest WAG on the block Ayesha Mukherjee is at the other.
A sports junkie, amateur boxer and mom to two girls, this stunning half-English and half-Bengali girl and flamboyant all-rounder Shikhar Dhawan tied the knot last year. Their age difference—he’s 27 to her 40 something—doesn’t marry one bit to this much in love couple. He’s upped his game after he met her and she’s been nothing but supportive and a pillar of strength to her handsome, super talented husband. In fact, Dhawan has often talked about Ayesha’s contribution to his success and other cricket WAGS are full of praise for her sexy, well maintained figure and impeccable sartorial choices. The beautiful lady made sure her daughters were comfortable with Dhawan before she tied the knot. Full marks to the couple for scoffing at convention without rocking the boat and ruffling feathers.
The classy Anjali Tendulkar
The doyen of all WAGs, Dr. Anjali Tendulkar is almost as legendary as her husband, the ‘Little Master’ Sachin Tendulkar.
Married for more than 15 years, it was a case of love at first sight for the master blaster. A pediatrician by profession Anjali opted to take break after her children were born, and even today she prefers to cheer her famous husband from the stands, demure, elegant, classy and genteel. Beautiful and always immaculately turned out, Anjali prefers to keep a low profile, with a gentle almost shy smile hovering at the ready.
Praveen’s blushing bride Sapna
Married less than a year ago, pace bowler Praveen Kumar only has eyes for childhood sweetheart Sapna Chaudhary.
An international level shooter, this tall and slender Miranda House alumni could pass off as a model. The enamored groom especially flew to Lucknow to buy a sherwani for the occasion. The wedding ceremony itself was a low key affair. Now all eyes are on Sapna to up the style quotient in the WAG stands and give Sakshi some sartorial competition.
Natasha the fashionista
Post India’s World Cup win, one of the many Indian cricketers to take the plunge included Gautam Gambhir who tied the knot with Natasha Jain.
Daughter of a Delhi-based businessman and fashion aficionado, the pretty girl loves painting, shopping, makeup, designer wear and jewelry. She counts Tarun Tahiliani and Nikhil-Shantanu among her favorites. Her wedding ensemble was designed by Tahiliani and Nikhil-Shantanu created the mehendi outfit. Louis Vuitton, Hermes, Chanel and Prada are other adored designers. Natasha is a girlie girl and admits that she’s not much into cricket, though she’s making a bigger effort now to learn the intricacies of the game. Aah, the things we do for love…
