The ultimate guide to moisturizers for male skin
Smooth, unlined skin isn’t just a female prerogative.
Shaving foam? Check! Shower gel? Check! Fragrance? Check and check again! Moisturizer? Not so sure….Actually of all the weapons in a man’s grooming kit, a good moisturizer is probably the most effective and important. Apart from the more obvious moisturizing benefits that prevent skin from drying out, they can actually delay the signs of aging. Do this regularly and you’ll never need expensive anti-aging treatments. All you need is a hardworking moisturizer because it can actually plump up skin, minimize dehydration—far more common than you think, thanks to the endless cups of java and air conditioned offices—and keep your skin plump, healthy and happy.
So how do moisturizers work?
The basic function of a moisturizer is to treat your skin when it’s dry and also prevent it from drying out again. It does this by holding water in the stratum corneum, the outermost layer of the skin. But the effect of a moisturizer goes deeper. It helps protect your skin from the environment and pollutants. Applying a moisturizer regularly creates a barrier on your skin that keeps skin oils from escaping. The barrier also prevents harmful external elements from causing dryness or irritation. Most moisturizers contain water, oil and humectants like glycerin to conserve the skin’s moisture. These positive effects last for about six to eight hours, which is why you need to apply a formula twice a day for best results.
How can you pick the one that’s right for you?
The first step to finding THE ONE is figuring out your skin type first. Don’t get fooled by clever marketing speak that claims “this product is suitable for all skin types” because such a formula rarely exists in good skin care. Most specialized skin care brands have specific moisturizers for different skin types. So if your skin is prone to rashes, irritation and redness you need to look for a hyopallergenic moisturizer formulated for “sensitive skin”. The perfect moisturizer for such skin is Sesderma Acglicolic Classic Crema Gel Hidratante. Meanwhile if you have dry, flaking skin look for a specialist cream designed for “dry skin” that contains emollients to maximize skin hydration such as are L’Oreal Paris Men Expert White Activmoisturising Fluid SPF 20 PA+++. If you have oily skin, consider yourself lucky because such skins age more slowly thanks to plentiful natural sebum secretion. However that doesn’t mean you don’t need a moisturizer. Oil and water aren’t the same thing and even the greasiest skin can still be dehydrated. Use an oil control face wash like Pond’s Men Oil Control Face Wash but also use moisturizers labelled ‘oil-free’ or ‘oil-control’ like L’Oreal Paris Men Expert White Activ Oil Control Moisturising Fluid SPF 20 PA+++ . Such formulas give skin much needed moisture minus the grease.
But what if you have combination skin?
Many men—like women—have combination skin; an oily forehead and chin, but drier cheeks and neck. So what’s a guy with combination skin to do? You could use an oil-free moisturizer all over, but in drier months it would be a good idea to use two moisturizers. Apply a regular one on the dry patches and an oil-free or oil-control formula on the shiny patches.
Don’t forget sunscreen!
There are a few ignorant types who think sunscreen is for sissies. Hopefully you don’t fall into that category. Just think of Hugh Jackman and countless international sportsman who’ve battled skin cancer thanks to unprotected sun exposure. Exposing your skin to UVA and UVB rays not only puts you at higher risk of skin cancer but makes skin age faster. Dermatologists contend that up to 80% of wrinkles are caused by sun exposure. So it you’re a smart guy you’ll look for a sunscreen with a SPF of at least 30 like Kaya Sweat Proof Sunscreen SPF 30+ or Vichy Capital Soleil Protective Sun Cream Face SPF 50+. Use it over your regular moisturizer. However, to speed things up in the a.m. you could use a moisturizer with inbuilt sunscreen like Kaya Whitening Moisturizer With SPF 15 – For Men or Neutrogena Oil Free Moisturiser SPF15. Then switch to a regular moisturizer in the evening.
Here’s to a healthy, moisturized visage!
