Nine must-haves to sail through the summer.
Summertime is a double edged sword. With the sun beating down, tanning, sweat, body odor and breakouts are likely. But the balmy weather also means lazy days by the pool, long Sunday brunches and picnics. So what’s a guy to do? The solution is simple, just stock up on the nine most important warm weather products so that you can enjoy summer like never before.
It’s raining men
Rising humidity levels demand a quick shower to cool off. Shower gels offer a far better bathing experience than soaps. A good shower gel should lather well, smell fantastic have a great texture. Look for a formula with refreshing and cleansing ingredients that cleanses, moisturizes and rejuvenates. A rich lather, pleasing fragrance and easy dispensation are other qualities to look for.
Check out Gillette All Over Clean Hair + Body Wash, a two-in-one hair and body shower gel, Terrake Anti-fatigue Shower Gel, a quality product for the body and face that cleanses without drying out skin, or Axe Instinct Shower Gel with a refresh fragrance that wakes you up. Opt for Gillette Face + Body Oil Control Body Wash or Nivea Energy Shower Gel For Men if you have excessively oily skin.
Soft, smooth facial skin
Putting your best face forward was never as important. Summertime means clear skies, the great outdoors and beach parties. Before you think creams and lotions are for women, think about it as insurance against leathery, wrinkly skin that can age you before time. There are countless products to choose from but for best results find a formulation best suited for your skin type, normal, dry, oily, combination and sensitive.
Check out Gillette Series Facial Moisturizers. Finish a great shave with this aloe vera-enriched facial moisturizer. It’s a lightweight, non-greasy formula, with a Vitra Lipid Complex to keep all skin types hydrated all day. Or go with Nivea for Men Advanced Whitening Cell Repair Moisturizer SPF 20 a moisturizer and skin repair formula with a Multi-White Complex to reduce pigmentation, even out skin tone and soften skin texture.
Smell sweet through summer
Humidity and heat can play havoc with body odor but you’ll have nothing to worry about as long as you are deodorant and antiperspirant protected. If you’re the kind of guy who wakes up every morning and slaps on some deo after a shower and stays dry, smelling great all day, you have nothing to worry about. But if you get smelly and sweaty by afternoon, apply deodorant at night. The reason: In the morning your sweat more and the formula gets washed off. Meanwhile at night sweating is minimal so the formula reaches the sweat glands unobstructed.
Nykaa recommends Raymond La Sensation Deodorant, Park Avenue Zing Body Deodorant, Garnier Men Anti Sweat 48H Intense Sport Deodorant, Gillette Professional Power Sport Protect Deodorant and Garnier Men Absolute Dry Deodorantto keep you smelling sweet all day.
Block burns with sunscreens
Nykaa recommend Lotus Herbals Safe Sun Men Advanced Daily UV shield PA+++I SPF-30. Men’s skin tends to be thicker, so specialized sun protection is a good idea. This formula offers non sticky, antiseptic sun protection and skin moisturizing. It also has a subtle masculine fragrance. You might also want to try VLCC Men Active Light Fairness Moisturizer or Garnier Men PowerLight Oil Control + Fairness Moisturizer. Both are light, not-sticky and oil-free moisturizers that prevent skin darkening and reduce dark spots, all the while protecting you harmful UVA and UVB rays. Also, check out newly launched Nivea for Men Advanced Whitening Dark Spot Reduction, a moisturizer and skin repair formula with SPF 30.
Smooth talk with lip balm
If you are planning to skip this one, don’t. Lip balm isn’t for women only. Lips can get very dry because they don’t naturally create their own moisture layer since they’re lacking in sebaceous (oil) glands. Look for a lip balm that hydrates instantly, gets absorbed quickly and doesn’t feel waxy and heavy on the lips.
Besides, chapped, flaky lips look ugly and make talking painful. Summer heat can dry out lips just as dry winter weather can. Time to seal some moisture back with lip savers like Nivea Essential Care-Lip Balm Essential Care enriched with Jojoba Oil and natural Shea Butter to prevent moisture loss, leaving lips soft and smooth. Or try Nivea Pure & Natural Olive & Lemon – Lip Balm, a smooth textured balm made with organic, natural and preservative-free ingredients
Stay safe with insect repellents
Men like being adventurous; trekking through fields, horsing around with the kids in the great outdoors, picnicking with friends. You might not think it’s manly to dab on some insect spray but the risk of tick and mosquito-borne diseases like Lyme disease, malaria and dengue are very real during the summer. Covering up while outdoors is an option but can get uncomfortable in the heat. Insect repellents work by masking the body’s odor, making you virtually invisible to mosquitoes.
Essentials oils like rosemary oil, lemongrass and citronella naturally repel insects. Fabindia Mosquito Repellant with Natural Oils made with a blend of hydrating coconut oil and natural repellants like citronella and lemongrass essential oil, is a DTT-free solution to staying insect bite-free all summer. You could also opt for Tatha Insect Repellent, a herbal antidote minus harmful pesticides and chemicals to keep insects at bay.
The clipped look is in
Summer equals bare feet and socks off. But nothing is more off putting than unkempt nails and unshorn feet. Time to bring out the nail clippers. Choose from Vega Large Nail Clipper, Bare Essentials Nail Clippers and Bare Essentials Nail Clippers Travel. Use these perfect performance tools to trim with ultra-precision. For best results, soak nails before clipping to soften and cut nails straight across to avoid ingrowths.
Try and stay away from the fleshy parts of fingers and toes to avoid painful infection and after clipping, follow up by filing to seal nail edges. It’s advisable to start from the outside of the nail and move inward towards the center, filing in one direction only to prevent splitting. Nykaa likes Vega Nail File Large – 8", Bare Essentials Emery Boards and Basicare 3 Way Nail Shaper – 18cm.
TLC for your feet
Cracked and dry heels are no way to kick off summer revelries. The main cause of painful cracks is extreme dryness. Going barefoot, standing for hours, obesity and wearing the wrong shoes can make the problem worse. Soaking your feet in a warm foot bath infused with lavender or rose essential oils is great for softening heels and restoring moisture to weatherworn feet. Alternatively you could use a foot scrub like H2O+ Pumice Foot Scrub to soften calluses.
Pat your feet dry gently and gently massage a deep moisturizer like Khadi Jasmine Green Tea Foot Crack Cream, Fabindia Organic Body Hand and Foot Cream or Sally Hansen Healing Foot Cream. Put on a pair of old cotton socks and catch some zzzs. Wake up in the morning to soft, smooth feet and heels. Try and do this at least twice a week.
Eyebrows thin and fade with age. Over plucking only makes matters worse. Stick with their natural shape, just plucking out strays.
Accentuate their shape by filling sparse brows with an eyebrow powder or pencil like Konad Auto Style Eyebrow a shade lighter than your natural brow color. Make soft slanting strokes to fill in sparse patches. Then run a clear brow gel over them and brush them up and out towards your temples.
Blush on the flush
A rosy flush on the cheeks can breathe instant life into your face. Big mistake: applying blush in a slash of color that stretches across the cheekbones in drama queen shades like wine and cinnamon. Get a lit-from-within glow by applying it right.
Smile, then find the fleshiest part of your cheek and apply color just slightly above it. Then blend the color out toward your temples in circles, not a line, using a big fluffy brush like Colorbar Chic Cheeks Contouring Brush. Choose from shades like Lakme Pure Rouge Blusher and Lotus Herbals Natural Blend Botanical Blusher. Getting that first flush of youth was never easier!
