Rose Otto (Rosa damascena); Otto is the Bulgarian word for "oil". Since the 17th century, the region around the town of Kazanlik in Bulgaria has been the world's most successful source of Rose Otto essential oil. In the mid-20th century, Bulgarian growers began producingthe oil successfully in Turkey too. Production is labour-intensive; the flowers are hand-picked at dawn, when the fragnance is the strongest, and it takes around 200 blooms to produce just a few drops of pure oil.
Its beautiful fragnance has a honeyed sweetness and subtle fresh, floral top notes. The oil is non-toxic, non-irritant and non-sensitizing and is safe for all skin types. Rose Otto nurtures the "inner child". The essential oil encourages the expression of unconditional love. A blend of Rose Otto, May Chang and Agnus Castus in a carrier oil massaged into the skin using calming strokes helps soothe the mood swings of pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS) or the menopause.
A bath with 2 drops Rose Otto and 4 drops Cistus relieves feelings of grief and sadness. To soothe dry, sore baby skin, 1 drop Rose Otto mixed into 20 ml/4 tsp carrier oil should be rubbed gently into the affected areas. A blend of 2 drops Rose Otto and 2 drops mandarin in 20 ml/4 tsp carrier helps prevent stretch marks in the second half of pregnancy.
