Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) is native to Australia and produces one of the most well-known essential oils. The tree was first discovered by Captain Cook's sailors in the 18th century, where they brewed a tea with its leaves to fight scurvy, hence the plant's common name. The indigenous Aborigines were already well aware of the healing powers of the leaves, and been using them to relieve respiratory problems and headaches. It has been proved by research that Tea Tree essential oil has powerful antimicrobial and antifungal effects. Its aroma is fresh, pungent and medicinal, with sweeter woody notes as it evaporates.
