Hello brides-to-be! Your much-awaited, most photographed day of your life is right around the corner—capturing everything from the decor and your stunning bridal ensembles to the venue and everything else in this mix. And while your dreamy, romantic wedding unfurls, we had a few standout recommendations for your bridal makeup look, in case you’re looking for some inspiration.

It gets better. To make sure we recommend the best from beauty, we spoke to Alok Sharma, trainer for the luxury makeup label Charlotte Tilbury about all the must-haves that every bride must consider for her D-day—whether you’re the bride-to-be or even just part of her brigade.

Scroll down for everything you need to know.

Beauty Book: What’s the one thing all brides must keep in mind before starting their makeup?

Sharma: Every bride needs a beauty regimen leading up to the wedding day. Trust us, we always know when your skin hasn’t been well-cared for. Makeup needs a hydrated, healthy base and skincare is, therefore, a must. Get a personalised consultation from a dermatologist at least a few months before the big day. Also, please get your eyebrows shaped the way you want, double cleanse your face right before you sit for your makeup and come with confidence and trust in your artist.

Beauty Book: What’s your go-to base for a bride?

Sharma: I like to prep the skin before I apply the base with Charlotte’s Magic Cream. It immediately plumps up the skin and makes it ready for makeup. Next, I use the Hollywood Filter as a primer. It’s a beautiful, innovative product that adds a ‘megawatt glow’ to your skin and makes the perfect base for your foundation.  My go-to foundation is the Airbush Flawless foundation. With Charlotte Tilbury’s ‘magic matrix of ingredients’ (that includes Replexium, MossCellTec no. 1, and AirCool,  all patented by CT), this foundation is weightless, and hydrating that makes your skin look fresh and perfect. It lasts all day and is sweatproof, humidity-proof, waterproof and transfer-proof. Finally, I finish with the Airbrush Flawless Finish which is a powder formula that sets your makeup in place without taking away the glow, so your face isn’t caked up or powdery.

Beauty Book: Can you share a few don’ts that every bride reading this should keep in mind before getting her makeup done?

Sharma: The biggest mistake would be to start your makeup without cleansing and prepping your skin correctly. Clean, moisturised and hydrated skin always makes makeup more receptive and it’s easier for the look to stay on for much, much longer.  Some brides even tend to forget drinking water for the last few days leading up to the wedding. It should actually be the other way round. Drink more water than usual in the last 2 to 3 days. Your skin will show hydration.

Beauty Book: Any tips and tricks for contouring, and highlighting the face right?

Sharma: Many women have asked me if contouring and highlighting is a necessary step. Yes, it is. Foundation tends to camouflage the contours of your face, so we must bring them back with the right shades and products. Always contour considering the face shape. Follow the trends, but wisely, because you may not need as much as you think.  For brides, I like to intensify the highlights a little extra with a cream-based contour like the Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Contour Wand. It glides onto the skin for an effortless, chiselled look. I pair it with the Filmstar Bronze & Glow for a stunning, light radiance.

Beauty Book: How does one make sure the makeup stays smudge-free, and long-lasting during the wedding?

Sharma: You need to pick products that stay on you all day long.

Step 1:

For your face, Charlotte’s Magic Cream with SPF 20 is a great base as it holds the makeup in place for a long time. The Magic Away Liquid Concelaer lasts 16 hours, is smudge-proof and humidity-proof. Both the Airbrush Flawless Foundation and the Flawless Finish Powder stay in place through the day as well.

Step 2:

For your brows, the Brow Cheat will define your shape and last over 16 hours. You can follow this up with the Brow Fix.

Step 3:

For your eyes, look for your eyeshadow shades in the Luxury Palette, add the Rock ‘n’ Kohl liner for some definition and finish with the Pillow Talk Push Up Lashes Mascara. Your eye makeup won’t budge.

Step 4:

For your cheeks, start with the Contour Wand to add dimension, then use the Filmstar Bronze & Glow for some extra intensity. You can use the Cheek to Chic blush for longer wear.

Step 5:

For your lips, use the smudge-proof Lip Cheat Lip Liner that will hold the colour for six hours. Define the shape of your lips and then fill it all in. Then use the Matte Revolution Lipstick for an all-day-long effect. You might need to touch up after you drink or eat.

Step 6:

To lock your makeup, my go-to trick is spritzing on the Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Setting Spray. It’s a great primer too and for people with oily skin, this spray can be used to set the foundation in place as a middle step before adding colours to your face. So, you can use this pre, during and post makeup!

Beauty Book: While no makeup look can possibly suit all, what’s the one thing that can create a whole lot of difference between regular and bridal makeup?

Sharma: The process of application makes all the difference when it comes to bridal makeup. Every step, every prep is more intensified and well-planned. There are more layers involved than your regular makeup. I find trials to be a great way to perfect this process. If it works with your budget, I recommend a trial with your MUA to make sure you use the right products that work for specifically your skin and your vision matches with your artist.
