“It feels like yesterday that I was waiting to meet with the Nykaa Team at The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf at Inorbit Malad 10 years ago, to talk about a new website called Nykaa. I had recently graduated from IIT Bombay with a bachelor’s degree in Metallurgy and Material Science, and was now working full time on my beauty blog, a decision that seemed ridiculous to pretty much anyone back then, when social media was not a viable career option in India.
Then the team had been so lovely to come all the way to Malad to meet with me, though they could have just as easily asked me to come to South Bombay to their new offices. They talked to me about a new beauty retailer Nykaa which was just about to go live in India, and how they wanted to do something different by marrying retail with content to help shoppers make more informed decisions. I still remember when they offered me to come work for Nykaa full time for their in-house digital magazine, Beauty Book but I didn’t take it up at the time because I wasn’t keen on working for anyone but myself back then. We decided instead that I will write a weekly piece of content for the magazine and that’s how my journey with Nykaa began. I am so proud to have worked with them right from the start, with the weekly columns (which were my first bit of paid work in the industry for the first few years) evolving into shooting content for their YouTube channel and social media handle, to hosting masterclasses and events with them.
Nykaa has single-handedly changed the beauty landscape for the Indian beauty consumer. They’ve not only made beauty products accessible to every pin code in the country, but they’ve also brought over so many international brands to India, brands that were previously so hard to find! Gone are the days when you had to plead with relatives travelling from abroad to bring you exciting beauty products. You can get them so easily now with a click of a button! They also gave (and continue to give) a platform to so many budding creators to collaborate with them and co-create content with them. I grew from blogging to YouTube to Instagram with Nykaa, and I’m so grateful for that opportunity that helped me grow with them! Someone here in the UK recently mentioned reading about Falguni Nayar when she was declared as India’s richest self-made woman billionaire by Forbes it gave me great pleasure to tell them about Nykaa and the key role they’ve played in the growth of the Indian beauty industry. I can’t wait to see what the next 10 years will bring!”
