BB Editor Talk: Three Ways To Wear Pop Colors For Different Skin Tones

by | 2 shares 14K views 14K views

Amidst the grey skies, quarantine life, zoom calls and endless baking sesh, I almost forgot that September was here—the onset of a fresh new season with countless things to look forward to. My favs though: a mug of spicy hot chocolate and the gorgeous amalgamation of striking beauty looks that will wake us up from this monotonous haze; think: striking pop colors that can vanquish all your moody blues and make a statement wherever you go—be it your next digital date or your neighborhood grocery store. Girls, there are no rules anymore!

However, if you think pop colors are tough to pull off IRL, you can’t be more wrong. To put things into perspective, I and my colleague Lakshmi dabbled with a myriad of cheery hues to create three uber wearable looks for different skin tones, that are oh-so-easy to emulate. While Lakshmi opted for pearly blues, deep salmon and bold scarlets, I chose pretty lilacs, moss greens, vivid pinks and dazzling orange as my armor of choice.

Colorful Makeup Look – Dual-toned eyes

1. Dual-Toned Eyes

The easiest way to incorporate oodles of color is to paint ‘em lids. To rock this 2020 fall makeup trend, I have used a vivid lavender toned hue on my upper lashline and a green hue for the bottom ones. (PS: If you have hooded eyes like me, draw a thick line along the lower lashline to create an impact.

How To: Start by applying Kiko Milano Smart Colour Eyeshadow - 20 Pearly IrisCoat on your lids. Blend well. Next apply the minty shade from the Huda Beauty Matte & Metal Melted Double Ended Liquid Eyeshadows - Minted & Dinero on your lower lashline. Complete the look by coating your lashes with Benefit Cosmetics BADgal Bang! Mascara and finish off with a nude lippy like the Nykaa Ultra Matte Lipstick - Monalisa 09.

2. Sunset Blush

Looking for a way to offset ‘em sunset eyes? A stunning mix of orange and peach blush on your cheeks, ofcourse. The color looks stunning on all skin tones and makes them pop; plus, we love how the look is oh-so easy to put together. I also added a pair of falsies for good measure, because why not?

How to: After prepping you skin, swipe SUGAR Face Fwd Blush Stick - 01 Coral Climax (Bright Coral) on your cheeks till you reach your desired color saturation. Since it’s all about adding a pop, I would say more is less. If you love the monotone look, swipe L'Oreal Paris Infallible Paints Eye Shadow - 314 Sunset Fire on your lids and finish off with two coats of mascara. A neutral nude lip (Maybelline New York Color Sensational Creamy Matte Lipstick - Daringly Nude) will offset this beautifully.

3. Look-At-Me Lips

A bright colored pout paired with glossy skin and a winged liner is a match made in heaven. I choose the fuchsia hue that is perfect for just any time of the day and occasion. In fact, this has been my constant for all my Zoom meetings.

How To: Prep your skin and add a dash of highlighter on the bridge of your nose, chin and along the cheekbones. Using the Faces Canada Ultime Pro A Matte Made In Heaven Mini Ink Eyeliner, draw a winger liner along your upper lashline. Next apply two coats of mascara both on the upper and lower lashline. Finish off by swiping Masaba By Nykaa Lipstick - Touch Me Not on your lips.

Bright Makeup Look – Mermaid Lids

1. Mermaid Lids

For my eyes we’re talking bold doses of aqua wash, splashes of midnight silver, a pair of flirty falsies, and a pitch-black mascara. If you’re not an expert at applying falsies, don’t sweat. Cheat it by drawing a thin black liner on your top lash line, like I did (tee-hee).

How To: Try the Kiko Milano Smart Colour Eyeshadow in the shade Pearly sea blue and add the Metallic moon stone from the Kiko Milano collection to add some drama on your brow bone. Slap on the Huda Beauty Classic Lash - Samantha with the help of a heavy-duty lash glue like the Huda Beauty Latex-Free Lash Glue - Clear. Complete your look by applying oodles of black mascara like the Kay Beauty Volume & Length Mascara - Midnight and draw a thin liner on your upper lash line with the Nykaa Black Magic Liquid Eyeliner - Super Black to seal the deal.

2. Salmon Cheeks

Confession: when it comes to the right blush, brown girls have it hard. Keeping that in mind, I tried my hand on crispy pink cheeks for an extra lift. To get this look, you need two shades of pink. A deep pink and the other that’s on the lighter side. The reason I fell in love with this shade is due to its versatility. It’s perfect for all occasions (including impromptu zoom calls with friends).

How to: Start by applying the Too Faced Papa Don't Peach Blush on the apple of your cheeks. Now, here’s a little trick. Dab a little loose powder like the Makeup Revolution Luxury Baking Powder Banana to lock the pigment and to balance it out a little. Top that up with a wash of lighter shade of pink like the Flower Beauty Flower Pots Powder Blush - Sweet Pea.

Bright Makeup Look – Scarlet Pout

3. Scarlet Pout

Come rain or shine, a bright red lipstick will never fail you (or your lips). I picked a scarlet red to remind every woman of color that a good revolutionary color will always have your back, no matter what. I highly suggest dabbing on some concealer on your lips for those with darker lips, to help deliver a stronger color payoff.

How To: Start by hydrating your lips with the The Body Shop Vitamin E Lip Care SPF 15. Those with dark lips can gently dab on some concealer (that matches your skin tone) on your lips as a base. If you ask me, a stick formula like the Nykaa SKINgenius Foundation Stick Conceal Contour & Corrector would be perfect for a fuss-free application. Now add a gorgeous red lipstick to complete the look. I personally love the Masaba By Nykaa Lipstick - Femme Fatale, especially for dusky skin tones.
