Before the birth of the world wide web, noteworthy news only travelled on tabloids. Like John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s controversial photo on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine in 1981. Some called it crass whilst others a brave representation of being comfortable with who you are. Moving to the present, things have clearly taken a digital detour. The internet is at its prime. Covers like the much debated cover shot of Priyank Chopra’s photoshopped underarms for Maxim pull attention and the term "Break the Internet" come into play whenever a memorable moment seems to crash every social media platform and news outlet. Are the new age trends a litmus test for the year’s beauty climate? We’ll let you be the judge of that.
That said, there have been a wide range of beauty sightings in 2019 that have taken on a life of their own online. Everything from Naomi Janumala’s global domination to Kim’s bejeweled Mugler couture (that may or may not defy the laws of physics) let’s take a moment to relive the most prominent viral moments of 2019.
Let’s take a moment to relive the most prominent viral beauty moments of 2019.
1. The Big Short
This month Hailey Bieber channeled her inner Mia Wallace - In August, and abandoned her buttery blonde ’do for a drenched brunette bob and hit a whopping 214K double taps on the ‘Gram in minutes. While the 22-year-old supermodel was busy reinforcing her versatility for the Interview magazine, we were busy dialing our local salons for the nearest hair appointment. It’s honestly a relief to see short coiffures (that exude the strength of a woman) sidetrack vanilla, traditional locks. On a side note, did you know that Bieber is naturally brunette?
2. How You Dewing, Kim?
Yes, Kim’s did receive some serious shade for her skin-tight Mugler dress (that made her waist nearly invisible). What caught our attention though was her impressive makeup choice created by the phenomenal Mario Dedivanovic. Officially described as the ‘wet and dripping’ aka ‘just out of the water’ beauty look by multiple publications, the American reality star displayed caramel glossy lids, wet finger waves, pronounced lashes and monochromatic lips. Super glassy if you ask us.
3. Gaga Over Gaga
Everybody is still talking about Lady Gaga’s fierce gown transformation at the MET gala held in May. The second I spotted the much talked about clip on my Instagram feed, I gasped so loudly that my neighbor probably heard me. For those living under a rock, Gaga had four outfit changes on the red carpet (kudos to the confidence). That said, what really stole our hearts were her ultra magnified gilded foil lashes, dramatic black and white winged liner and bubblegum lips. Also, opting for that gorgeous wavy platinum bob was genius because it helped neutralize the entirety of the look.
4. Bold And The Beautiful
If there’s anyone that can make fluffy brushed-out curls look relevant, it’s Priyanka Chopra Jonas. Her stunning adaptation of the Mad Hatter from Alice In Wonderland truly made a mark in gala history. Apart from that sensational Dior couture, Chopra sported pronounced lashes, super accentuated red and white makeup accents, blocked-out brows and maroon lips. Also, did you notice that she brought a little bit of home to the gala carpet by slapping on a gorgeous silver rhinestone bindi.
5. Gen-Z Domination
Over to the most talked about Indian splashed all over global tabloids as we speak. Naomi Janumala. While sporting a strong purple foil lip, Janumala not only proves that brown girls can wear purple and look DELICIOUS but also reminds us in this rigid social order how dark skin is just so damn beautiful. There’s more. This 19-year-old Mumbai-based model (also the niece of famed comedian Johnny Lever) is the new face of Rihanna’s inclusive line Fenty Beauty. When RiRi met Janumala she said ‘You’re so gorgeous, it’s annoying, I don’t even want to stand next to you!”. Talk about a good viral story, right? Keeping waving the flag high Janumala. We’re rooting for you.
