Abs, and good skin* are made in the kitchen. Rustling up some beauty concoction in the kitchen is not necessarily a sign of thrift, but good sense borne from grandma’s wisdom. Sure, there are skin innovations aplenty from sheet masks to serums, but nothing can beat those tried and tested home-made face masks choc-a-bloc with the goodness of good-to-eat goodies.

Here’s how to prepare face masks at home for a clear, glowing skin:

Grandma’s besan uptan

What’s it: Skin brightening and de-tanning mask
How it works: Here’s how you work this age old nuska; Mix togethertwo tablespoon chickpea flour (besan) with a few drops of lemon juice, one tablespoon curd  or milk, one teaspoon ground rice flour and a splash of rose water. Apply on your face and wait till it dries. Then use cool water to wet and rub it off in gentle circular motions. Rinse with cool water and pat dry.
PS: Added benefit; over time, gets rid of facial hair. Yay!
We tried it and…
Skin felt velvety soft and definitely fairer.  Dry skinned gals should use milk, while curd works well on oily skin. A splash of Khadi Natural Herbal Skin Toner Rose Water afterwards adds a refreshing burst.

Oats Versus Blackheads

What’s it: Fail-Proof Blackhead Buster
How it works: Oats are standard breakfast fare, now how about feeding them to your face? Instead of adding milk, mix together equal parts of lemon juice and Juicy Chemistry Rose Water. Add a tablespoon of oats to this and apply all over those offending dots. Oatmeal is a natural exfoliant and lemon kills bacteria. Leave on for about 20 minutes and gentle rub off. Rinse with cool water.

Blackheads disappeared magically and skin felt soft and smooth. You could add a dash of honey to the mixture if your ski is usually dry. Finish up with a dab of Neutrogena Deep Clean Blackhead Eliminating Cooling Toner.

Avocado On Your Face

What’s it: A Moisturising Face Mask Par Excellence
How it works: You like avocado on toast, now how about feeding your face? This one’s almost like guacamole for your skin. Mix up mashed, ripe avocado and honey. The natural oils in this superfood emit oodles of hydration for parched skin. Rinse with tepid water and pat dry.
PS: Added benefit; over time, gets rid of facial hair. Yay!
We tried it and…
It felt like a squishy, gloppy mess. But the results…wow! Don’t forget to apply sunscreen afterwards. Try Neutrogena Ultrasheer Dry Touch Sunblock SPF 50.

Berries For Your Pores

What’s it: Pore Minimizer That Gives Toners A Complex
How it works: Some straight talk here, you can’t change the size of your pores. But you can make them look smaller. Berry attack! Mix two teaspoons of Acai berry, one teaspoon olive oil and one teaspoon sugar. Mash the berries with a pestle. Leave on your face for 15 minutes.
We tried it and…
Not only was this mixture an effective pore minimiser, it also left the skin feeling nourished, fresh and hydrated. Quick tip: Mix two drops of Nykaa Naturals Tea Tree Essential Oil for an astringent, antibacterial rush. .

Hello Apples, Bye Wrinkles

What’s it: Detox Face Mask For Youthful Glow
How it works: Pollution, stress, of course age can make your ski dull and wrinkly. Here’s an all-rounder, almost what the doctor ordered. Peel and chop up an apple. Cook it with water till its soft, then mash up. Mix one teaspoon of milk powder and honey and blend well. Apply on your face for 15 minutes. Rinse after 15 minutes with tepid water
PS: Added benefit; over time, gets rid of facial hair. Yay!
We tried it and…
You can almost feel this divine smelling (and tasting) mask getting absorbed into skin. You almost don’t want to rinse it off! The apple is choc-a-bloc with antioxidants and vitamins. You can literally feel the dirt and pollution peel off you face. Oh also, skin felt soft and hydrated. To continue your romance with apple, splash on some Tjori Green Apple Face Toner for an apple cheeked glow.

Dessert For Dull Skin

What’s it: Cocoa For Brighter Skin
How it works: A lesser known fact; while dark chocolate is an anytime treat, it’s also a powerhouse of skin loving antioxidants Mix quarter cup each of cocoa powder and honey. Mix with enough coconut milk to make a smooth paste. Apply on face for 20 minutes. Rinse with tepid water and dab dry.
We tried it and…
Apart from the heady, delicious aroma, it felt amazingly nourishing on skin. Skin felt taut, brighter and nourished. We highly recommend it to brightens dull skin. Quick tip: Add some coffee granules into the paste for exfoliation and skin tightening benefits. Splash on some Biotique Bio Cucumber Pore Tightening Freshner if your face feels too tight afterwards.
