leg toning exercises - walking

1. Walk The Talk

Walking is perhaps one of THE best ways to tone and strengthen your legs. Basic as it is, all you need is a good pair of walking shoes to get grooving. The key is to hold a correct, upright posture (no leaning ahead or back) and maintain balance in order to avoid unnecessary strain on your hips, knees and spine. Focus on taking shorter, quicker steps for at least 45 minutes for maximum impact. As you get stronger, you can challenge yourself by climbing hills, walking on sand, or just adding jogging to the mix. PS: Attempt to walk 10,000 steps per day to see the magic happen.

2. Up-Cycle

Did you know that your cycle can be your best friend in your journey for toned, shapely legs? However, we recommend giving those stationary gym bikes a miss and hit the streets with your mountain bike that won’t only take you places but will tone those calves and strengthen your arms at the same time. To add variations, you can also try climbing hills that will add a bit of complexity to your overall activity. Don’t forget to swipe on some sunscreen, wear your sunnies and keep a bottle of water and towel handy.

3. Dance, Dance Baby

If you like getting’ a lil groovy, then dancing is perhaps the best bet for you. Afterall, what can me more fun than get your moves on to your favorite music? Nothing really! The trick is to find the right dance style for maximum impact. We recommend jazz, hip-hop and African dance styles that are fun, exhilarating and works on all the legs muscles simultaneously. Feeling a lil adventurous? How about joining a ballet class that help you to develop leg muscles you did not know you had in the first place!

4. Step It Up

We know this ain’t the first time you have heard this, but we are going to repeat this again as this really works! Swap the comfort of your elevators for stairs that not only aid in burning calories but will also strengthen the lower body, tone ‘em glutes and hamstrings and eventually help shed fat from your legs. The best way to do this right is to create a goal for yourself. Start slow with just a few flights of stairs (in the first two weeks) and then gradually increase the number of flights. As you get better, you can also skip a step at a time or run up, albeit carefully. It can’t get any easier than this!

5. Jump Rope

Brings back fond childhood memories, doesn’t it? Portable and convenient, this one is perfect whether you are a newbie or a hardcore fitness enthusiast. Start off by jumping rope for 20 seconds straight. Over time, aim for 60 seconds. What we love most though is that jumping rope not only uses the muscles in your lower body, but it also recruits the arms and core. Hallelujah!
