Everything You Need to Shield Your Skin and Hair, This Holi

by 3.9K views 3.9K views

The year is 2021. Streets may not be empty anymore, but the masks are still on (in all their sweat-inducing glory, of course!). People still fear the random cough heard at a distance or the dreaded sneeze, projected by the person on the next table in a restaurant. But guess what?! Life is moving (albeit treading a little slower than expected) along again and we are pretty excited for one of the first proper festivals of the year: Holi!

Yes, Holi isn’t cancelled, and we’re still hoping to squeeze in a little bit of that old-time Holi fun (but please don’t go back all the way to the pre-Covid era!). So, before we talk about skin and hair care, let us address the elephant in the room - Covid regulations!

HOLI HAI, PAR COVID BHI HAI

We know that most of you are pros at and are comfortable enough to take socially distanced measures, but a reminder hurt nobody. Here’s how you can enjoy a Covid-safe Holi:

  1. It is the safest to just not play Holi, but if you can’t help yourself, keep it limited to your immediate family.
  2. Don’t do it if you have travelled recently and haven’t had the time to quarantine.
  3. If anyone (or even you) may be celebrating by displaying signs of cold or fever, have them sit this one out.
  4. This one is a must but WEAR A MASK!
  5. Keep things dry and keep the use of water to a bare minimum.
  6. Keep up with your Vitamin C intake.
  7. Do not play in crowded outdoor areas.
  8. Try to sanitize your hands every hour and try to also keep them to yourself.

SKIN & HAIR ESSENTIALS

You know the rules, guys. No skin and hair protection, no Holi. The following tips are something you would have to swear by, if you want your hair and skin to come out unscathed, this Holi. Keep reading to know what you have got to do.

1. STAY SLICK

Hair is literally everyone's concern when it comes to Holi. It is very likely that your strands might be exposed to harmful colors. So, make sure to thoroughly oil them before you go out to play. However, oiling is not enough. Go for a slick, but stylish braid or a topknot that will keep color damage to a minimum.

2. SCREEN TIME

Skipping sunscreen any other day: no-no. Skipping sunscreen before playing Holi: girl, what are you doing? Even a mask and all that color can’t protect your face from the UV rays. We know it feels like an extra step, but think of it this way, with a mask and moisturizer, sunscreen is just an additional protective layer that will make taking the color off easier.

3. COLOUR BLOCK

Some places on your body, such as your nails, ears and hairline are more likely to retain all that color. Make sure you apply a layer of Vaseline to these areas before you go out to play with colors.

4. HYDRATION MODE: ON

You might think that applying moisturizer on your skin might attract more color, but it will actually keep your skin from absorbing any. You can apply some or a hydrating body oil to your body the night before, or a few hours before playing with colors.

5. THE AFTERLIFE

Prevention is better than cure, but what you do after playing Holi is also important. First things first, hop in the shower and gently scrub the color away with a loofah and a gentle cleanser. Take your time and try to reach as many crevices as possible. Next, rinse your hair with a good clarifying shampoo.
