Does your skin look tired, drab and saggy? Are mild signs of old-age creeping up on your skin? Does the thought of getting a surgical restorative procedure like Botox or Fillers bother you? Our ultimate go-to expert, Dr. Malavika Kohli suggests breakthrough laser skin tightening and body contouring!

Leading dermatologist, cosmetologist and Director of the exclusive skin clinic Skin Secrets, Dr. Kohli tells us that gone are the days when surgical procedures were the only options for contouring and skin tightening. Those procedures involve risk, recovery and pain, and are not necessary unless you need dramatic body sculpting or you have significant sagging skin.

“Everyone wants to look young and flawless,” she says, “and fortunately there are so many options nowadays to make you look beautiful and well groomed.”

BB: Who should go for laser treatments like these?

Dr. Kohli: “Non-surgical facial contouring and skin tightening works marvelously for clients in their 40s, where the neck is slender with mild to moderate skin laxity and some loss of definition around the jawline. Typically three to four sessions at six to eight weeks intervals—with follow up sessions every six months—are enough to stimulate collagen production. The result: a visibly sharper jawline and toned neck.

For older women with more pronounced skin looseness, bands around the neck and laxity around the jawline, the same swanlike neck is possible but with a little more effort. In such cases, facial contouring will involve lipolysis or localized liposuction to remove extra fat, fillers, Botox and minimal surgery.”

BB: Are there any after effects of facial contouring?

Dr. K: “Post session, there is minor discomfort that settles in a couple of days. The non-ablative radiofrequency (RF) energy laser with a micro-needling tip causes minimal redness that settles in a few hours. I simply suggest using a mild, soothing cream after the procedure, to stay away from chemical face washes and use sunscreen. This is not a ‘lunchtime procedure’ though, because there is redness and some swelling. So, it’s best to plan it for a Friday evening giving you adequate time to recover.”

BB: What kind of trailblazing skin tightening laser treatments do you suggest?

Dr. K: “Non-surgical skin tightening is in big demand with several laser treatments now on offer. Infrared light, Ultrasound Intense Pulsed Light, Pixel and Fraxel lasers are just some of them. The advantage of these affordable technology-driven skin tightening and skin resurfacing solutions is that there’s a minimal downtime and minor side effects. Ablative Fractionated Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Lasers are gentler on the skin and deliver beautiful, natural-looking results without the ‘deer in the headlights’ look that is sometimes seen after plastic surgery.”

BB: In what other ways does laser therapy help your skin?

Dr. K: “Lasers help in remodelling collagen and reducing pigmentation. They heat the dermis to stimulate the collagens that tighten and lift your skin. They are excellent for improving skin texture, tightening loose skin, minimizing scars and reducing uneven pigmentation. Ablative lasers actually allow the skin to heal itself more quickly. Erbium YAG treatments work well for less severe wrinkles, scars and other skin texture abnormalities. Meanwhile, the newest kid on the block is the Fractional Q Switched ND YagLaser that gives excellent results.”

Nykaa suggests: Help your skin mend post laser procedures by keeping it moist. Use Plum Green Tea Revitalizing Face Mist or Biotique Bio Cucumber Pore Tightening Toner.

BB: Are lasers intense?

Dr. K: Some laser treatments are more intense options for skin tightening than others. Thermage and Ulthera, amongst others, work deep under the surface of your skin. The top epidermal layers are bypassed, remodeling deeper layers and the effects can take up to three months to become noticeable. These are also non-invasive treatments and clients can resume their normal activities immediately. The treatment may be repeated after a year or two to maintain results.

Nykaa suggests: If you’re going for these slightly more intense procedures, talk to your doctor about complete recovery. Adding Vitamin C to your diet helps. Try Kapiva Ayurveda Multivitamin Gummies, GNC Vitamin C.

BB: Does laser therapy help in smoothening out your skin?

Dr. K: Definitely. Acne scars, pits and scars can also be treated with a host of lasers. Fractional Resurfacing is a new technique that is now used successfully to treat an uneven skin texture. The different types of fractionated lasers used include Pixel (2940nm), a fractionated ablative resurfacing Erbium YagLaser (for superficial and deep scars), FraxelStarlux Palomar Laser (for superficial and deep scars). While ablative lasers–CO2 and 2940 Erbium—and the 1540 Non ablative Erbium lasers both plump up scars and improve skin texture, there is less risk of pigmentation with non-ablative lasers.

Nykaa suggests: Hydrating your skin post such treatments helps recovery. Neutrogena Hydro Boost Capsule In Serum, L'Oreal Paris Hydrafresh Anti-Shine Icy Gel

BB: Is there a reluctance you face from new clients?

Dr. K: While laser treatments are gradually gaining popularity, most people still prefer relying on ‘miracles-in-a-jar’ to improve their skin. Clients are often reluctant about procedures that involve skin handling and prefer relying on hope that comes in a jar. While hair removal treatments including lasers have taken off big time, much still needs to be done to improve the underlying reticence about what lasers can do to improve skin quality and texture.
