How To Apply Mascara Correctly, Especially To Your Lower Lashes

Only if applying mascara was as self-explanatory as they make it seem, our lives would have been so much easier. Just open the tube, swipe it on, and get on with your life. Sadly, that’s not how the magic of mascara works.

Mascara application is a pretty complex process, considering how messy the pigment can get while working on an area that’s as intricate as your lash line. But since stepping out with blah-looking lashes is a punishable crime, putting in the extra time and patience isn’t a very big ask. Good thing, we’ve put together a pretty detailed handbook – Mascara Application 101 – that’ll help you please the Lash Gods like nobody’s business. Oh, and look for the special chapter on how to coat your lower lashes, stuff that no one really talks about.

Your Weapons Of Choice:

1. Lash combs are a thing and for good reason, especially if you’re blessed with brow-grazing lashes that need to be separated. The Seki Edge SS-603 Folding Lash Pin Comb does a great job at prepping the canvas.

2. Whoever told you that life is the same without a lash primer, probably loved her itsy-bitsy lashes a little too much to care. Scrap that crappy piece of advice and swipe on the Smashbox Photo Finish Lash Primer to extend your lash drama for longer.

3. We’ve heard about the ‘I’m afraid of the eyelash curler’ thing and honestly, just get over it already. Nothing opens your eyes better than a quick, 10-second curl session. On that note, we’re crushing on the Toniq Beauty Lashes For Days Eye-Lash Curler and not just because it’s rose gold in color.

4. Lastly, pick out the wand that works best for you. If you’re a volume baby, the L'Oreal Paris Voluminous Lash Paradise Mascara will help you get more bang for your buck. For uber long lashes, the Chambor Infinite Lash Lengthening Mascara Black is ideal while the Maybelline New York Volum Express Hyper Curl Mascarawill help you achieve a killer faux curl.

5. Oh, and who are we kiddin’? Of course, you might make a mess in the process but what’s bomb lashes without a couple of smudges, eh? Keep a Q-tip handy, just in case the universe brings upon a sneeze fest during the next ten minutes.

How To Apply Mascara:

1. Use your eyelash curler to lift and lengthen God’s rather skimpy gift to you. Start at the root, press together and hold it for a good 10 seconds. Leave and behold the difference.

2. Pop your lash primer on so your mascara has better staying power. Swipe two coats on both your top and bottom lashes and wait for a minute before moving on.

3. Funny but true, the way you open your tube of mascara decides what follows. Twist the wand out of the tube and wipe off excess product from the wand onto the edge of the tube. This saves you from making a clumpy, spidery mess of your flutter bugs. Also, STOP pumping the wand in and out of the bottle, for heaven’s sake. That’s exactly why your last tube dried so quick, woman!

4. We’ll start with the top lashes since that’s where you want most of the formula to be deposited. Now if you thought mascara could only be used underneath your lashes, erm maybe not. For mega high-impact lashes, cover them on both sides. Close your eye and go over the top of your lashes first.

5. Now listen up close because the magic is in the technique. Instead of gingerly brushing the wand up and over your lashes (which is what all of us have been doing until we knew better), hold the wand still at the lash line and blink hard through the bristles. The sheer force of blinking against the spoolie will make your lashes pick up more product and get closer to falsie-level glam. It might not leave you with the cleanest of lids but lashes this thick are worth a little extra clean-up, no?

6. Lower Lash Alert! For eyes that wow, remember that lower lashes are a big, big deal. Since they’re way more delicate, use only the tip of your wand and apply the product to just the root of your lashes to avoid any apparent clumpy sections. For the outer and inner corners, consider angling your wand vertically so each lash (even the tiniest baby) is separated and glazed over. Also, since you probably don’t want to end up looking like a raccoon by the PM, opt for a waterproof formula, at least for your lower lashes.

7. For truly va-va-voom lashes, go in for another round. Once the first coat has dried, brush a little translucent powder on your lashes before you go in for the second swipe. A wise idea here would be to go another formula for the second coat, a mascara that serves another purpose. Trust us, the difference between using two versus sticking to just one is staggering.
