Congratulations! Now that your wedding date’s fixed it’s time to start thinking about things beyond your wedding outfits and jewelry. After all, looking radiant on your big day requires months of planning. To avoid last minute drama, the wise bride should put together a beauty timeline for everything she needs to do, starting with making sure she has her best, most glowing skin in time for her special day. We spoke to Mumbai-based Dr. Jaishree Sharad, the skin doctor on popular bridal show Band, Baaja Bride.
What advice would you give to brides who haven’t had the time to begin their beauty schedule well in advance?
You are what you eat! A healthy diet is a must. Start a low salt, low calorie, protein rich diet. Make sure to add antioxidant-rich foods and supplements to your diet and look for these ingredients in your skin care products as well. Berries, dark grapes and oranges are full of antioxidants, minerals and vitamins. Aim to drink at least two liters of water daily. Also opt for green tea, coconut water and buttermilk and get six to eight hours of sleep every day. It’s also important to completely avoid sun exposure and use an oil-free sunscreen with SPF 30 about 20 minutes before you step out in the sun. Completely avoid alcohol, smoking and high salt foods at least a month before your wedding.
What’s the right time to start a proper skin routine?
Depending on the condition of the bride’s skin (tone, texture, acne, pigmentation), a dermatologist supervised routine should be started at least three months in advance. If there is significant pigmentation or acne, I recommend treatment at least six months before the big day. In the meantime, every bride can do her bit to gain maximum benefit from skin care treatments by using a gentle exfoliant at least thrice a week. Exfoliating purifies pores and stimulates collagen production, essentials for a glowing complexion.
How much in advance should laser treatments be undertaken?
Hair removal laser treatment should be started at least eight months in advance to ensure you’re hair-free on your wedding day. You will need six to eight sessions every four to six weeks to get rid of unwanted hair. Laser photo rejuvenation of skin can be done about two weeks before the wedding to get glowing, refreshed skin.
How long before the wedding should a facial be done?
Do your facial at least a month before your special day. Most girls go for one with just a week to spare before the wedding. This can be disastrous because facials cause redness and inflammation. While the effects are temporary, it’s best to do a facial well in advance so that skin can heal before the big day.
Should a bride experiment with new treatments for scars/spots weeks before the wedding?
All experiments should be undertaken at least five to six weeks before the wedding so that there’s enough time to treat any untoward reactions.
What treatments can a bride opt for before the wedding?
I would recommend mild peels (Lactic, Glycolic or Kojic peels) once a fortnight to get an even skin tone. A few sessions of skin polishing to clear dead skin, dirt, grime and tanning are also recommended. For deeper pigmentation, opt for Q switched Nd YAG laser treatment but start at least six months before your wedding
If you have tired looking sunken eyes and your face looks haggard, it’s best to get Hyaluronic Acid fillers about two months before your big day. It will lop off years from your face and make you look fresh even if you are exhausted with the hustle bustle around you!
