Ahead of its global release, Inside Out 2, (2024) is creating waves among Zillennials who saw and fell in love with Inside Out (2015). This Oscar-nominated kids' animation picture was a masterpiece in contemporary cinema, touching upon mature themes that go beyond conventional children's conversations. But more than the emotions having a field day controlling the protagonist, it’s the look that each of these emotions adorned that left a mark on me.
Every emotion sports a different colour palette that is ubiquitous to its essence. I personally loved the makeup and fashion of three emotions – Joy, Sadness, and Disgust. These emotions showcased the best style that truly represents who they are, and also happen to be the easiest to cop, with no hard feelings for the others (pun intended).
Let’s dive into Joy, Sadness, and Disgust’s makeup looks and how you can draw inspiration from them to glam up for a casual affair. While all the tutorials out there warrant an extreme makeover with face paint and wigs, I’m keeping it cool and casual with product recommendations suited to even your everyday office looks.
Sadness
Let’s start strong with my favourite character who made blue her thing! With blue hair, a blue face, blue brows, lashes, lips, and lids, sadness exemplifies ocean-blue makeup. Can you create a look inspired by this theme? With our recs, you certainly can.
Nykaa Recommends:
The first thing you notice when you lay eyes on sadness is her spectacles. These Round Rim Frames by TED SMITH are the perfect accessory to embrace your inner saddie-trying-to-be-a-baddie. Tie in the look with a bold, glittery eyeshadow from Moira Starshow; the micro-fine glitters and light-reflecting pearls will shine through your glasses. Finally, bring the look together with an unconventional blue lip; we recommend L.A. Girl’s Glitter Magic Shimmer Shifting Lip Color in the shade Starry Night. I know a blue lip is hard to pull off, but the blue eye makeup and glasses will definitely bring out the lustre of your luscious lips to mirror Sadness.
Disgust
Up next is Disgust – by far the most stylish in terms of makeup, hair, and ensembles. She exuded a mean-girl aesthetic, which of course is very on-brand for her. Let’s create a look that bears a resemblance to her character in the film.
Nykaa Recommends:
A makeup look inspired by Disgust would be incomplete without her extravagant green lashes that scream ‘attitude’! Sport a look with a pair of falsies from Beautiliss – high-quality yet reasonably priced false lashes. Complete this eye-centric look with Meloway Your Way Mascara in the shade Emerald Envy for that snatched appeal. Without shifting focus from the eyes, opt for a lighter lip colour with a metallic finish, such as Nykaa’s in-house formulation, Matte to Last! Transfer Proof Metallic Liquid Lipstick in the shade Thank U, Next. You can also use the lipstick as an eye shadow and blush for a near-perfect recreation.
Joy
If there is one character who can’t be missed from this list, it is Joy. Her minimalist beauty look perfectly complements her otherwise colourful personality, making her the easiest, albeit the most discerning character to take inspiration from.
Nykaa Recommends:
A pixie-girl personality needs pixie-blue hair. If permanent hair colouring is not your jam, try the temporary hair colour from Paradyes in the shade Denim Blue. All you need to do is wash your hair, apply the colour on damp strands, and brush it out. The colour shades on like makeup and can be removed after one wash. Pair your blue hair with blue eyes, courtesy of the Aqualens Aquacolor Contact Lens, and a glossy lip with Renée Cosmetics Super Natural Tinted Lip Oil in the shade Candy Floss – making this look perfect for a concert, a casual outing, or even a workplace event.
It’s not every day that an animated movie drops some killer looks that work on so many levels. With the second part dropping soon, I can't wait to create looks inspired by Boredom and Anxiety. Watch this space for more such Inside Out-inspired makeup looks!
