A red lippy is like the chanel 2.55 bag of the beauty world. It’s timeless, gorgeous and can make a statement wherever you go. However, not everyone finds the bold red, red lippy easy to pull off; in fact, I know a lot of people who find it uber intimidating to wear one, although really they want to. To them, we want to say don’t be afraid; because the truth is: there is nothing quite like the red lipstick to turn your mood or even your day around. I swipe it on whenever I need a little pick-me-up, and it makes me feel all kinda things-powerful, feminine, happy. The list goes on.

Don’t believe me? Scroll down as the Beauty Book Editors share their real life tryst with the highly empowering red lipstick—because, let’s face it: it’s not just a product. It’s an emotion!

“Let me just start off by saying that my love for a solid red lipstick knows no bounds. It has actually pulled me out of countless uncomfortable situations. Like for example this one time, I was extremely nervous right before I entered the conference room where I had to present to a large group. Before I allowed my body to freeze, I ran to my desk and crouched down to my office drawer and secretly applied some red lipstick literally seconds before the meeting for a confidence kick. Tbh, I performed better, I felt better. More power to Red (yes, I tend to personify my red lipsticks. No judgies, okay?) Oh, if you’re wondering what my personal favorite is, it’s the Bobbi Brown Luxe Matte Lip Color in the shade Red Carpet.”

My first red lipstick was the SUGAR Nothing Else Matter Longwear Lipstick. For the longest time, I was quite sceptical about red lipsticks. I would stick to nudes and browns, and enviously stare at women who had the courage and confidence to sport red lips. Once, someone gifted a shade of red to me, and my mum caught me hiding it at the darkest end of my drawer. I told her I wasn’t brave enough to put it on, and to help me get over my stupid concerns my mum had put on red lipsticks for over a week till I picked one up for myself! Thanks Ma, for pushing me to my most empowering self . Winks and kisses.”

“Back in my college days, I was fascinated by the bold red lip, but never had the courage to wear it, for the fear of looking OTT. To be honest I wasn’t too sure whether I could ever pull it off. It was my best friend who actually bought me my first red lippy. She was very fond of gorgeous crimson hues and wore them with aplomb; When I saw her embracing her tastes and individuality without a care in the world, I started wearing it too—and thus began my eternal love story with the red lipstick. Cut to this day, when I always have my favourite red lipstick which is the Smashbox Always On Liquid Lipstick in the shade Bawse with me everywhere I go. Not only does it perk up my look in seconds (no smokey eyes necessary), it also makes me feel confident and empowered.”

“Back in the day, I was quite a makeup-noob— well, aren’t we all, until one day we realise just how empowering those brush strokes can be? It was my 25th birthday, and I wanted to mark the milestone by making a memorable, bold makeup appearance at my party— I was all set, with a flattering black attire and shoes to match, and a friend who’d be my makeup-master for the day. But life had other plans, she fell sick, and I was left with my go-to mascara, as the only warrior in my makeup armour, and of course, zero awareness to realise what exactly would work. That’s when it happened, my tryst with the Lakme Enrich Lip Crayon in the shade Red Stop. It was lent by my sister, who thought that the bright red, in all its glory and power, would dress me up, especially since I was so new to it. And it did. I felt like I had arrived! It’s the one share I always carry with me, just in case I suddenly want to feel going out-ready, without wanting to put in too much effort.”

“The first time I wore red lipstick would have to be at a New Years party. I had been super scared of trying one for the longest time and I finally just went for it and reached for one in my mom’s vanity. Let me tell you, the confidence I felt? Simply unparalleled! There’s just something about a red pout that feels so empowering and feminine. I paired it with a classic winged eyeliner and kept my face matte, and while I may not remember every single detail about that day, I certainly remember how the red lippie made me feel feminine and fearless!” Nykaa recommends: M.A.C Retro Matte Lipstick - Ruby Woo
