Browse the net or read an e-paper, and pretty much all anyone’s talking about at the moment is Covid 19, the disease, its fallout, and gloomy statistics. At the time of writing this there have been more than 300,000 deaths worldwide, and the pandemic shows no signs of abating. So, what’s the first line of defense to keeping yourself safe? Seeing people wearing face masks on the street, in the supermarket and at work places has become a common sight, and medical professionals everywhere agree that these face cover-ups are really the best way to protect yourself (if you are Covid-free) and protect others (if you happen to be infected). We spoke to Dr Dhimant Goleria, a much-in-demand Mumbai-based surgeon who said that “Face masks are definitely recommended to the general population provided they are worn correctly.” This means, for the masks to be effective they need to be worn correctly, changed frequently, removed properly, disposed of safely and used in combination with good universal hygiene behaviors like washing hands frequently and always wearing or removing the mask after thoroughly washing your hands.
