Stay breakout and allergy-free during the monsoons
While the monsoons offer a welcome and refreshing respite from the summer sun, the humidity, acid rain and muddy water can herald a host of skin infections and allergies.
Problem
Fungal infections: Fungal infections are common in the rainy season because of wet clothes and shoes. Armpits, the groin area and the space between our toes are the most vulnerable.
Solution
Use an antibacterial bathing soap. After your shower dry yourself completely and dust some anti-fungal powder (Clotrimazole dusting powder is available at any chemist) on your feet, underarms, all body folds and groin. Wear open footwear when out in the rain. Always wash your feet with soap and water after a soaking. If your socks get wet on your way to work, change into dry socks when you get indoors.
Problem
Boils and pimples: As humidity levels rise, dirt and pollutants stick to sweaty skin. This is a thriving breeding ground for bacteria, making us vulnerable to boils, cysts and pimples.
Solution
Keep facial wipes handy and cleanse thoroughly once indoors to get rid of grime and dirt. It’s also sensible to keep a disinfectant-soaked hand towel handy to wipe hands and exposed body parts after a drenching. Keep your foundation light, preferably with a built-in SPF. Heavy foundation and eye makeup tends to smudge and bleed in the rain. Not a pretty sight!
Problem
Pediculosis (Lice): Hair lice infestations are very common irrespective of your social strata. In short, lice know no socio-economic barriers and are not just an affliction of the poor. Damp hair tied up too long can become a breeding ground of lice. Children are particularly vulnerable since they spend long hours together in cramped classrooms.
Solution
Always shampoo your hair after a soaking. Dry your hair completely before tying it up. If you get a lice attack, apply Perlice Lotion on the scalp at bedtime and rinse thoroughly in the morning. Up to three applications may be necessary.
Problem
Dandruff and lacklustre hair:  Normal to oily hair becomes greasy during the rains while dry hair tends to frizz. To add to your woes, an itchy, flaking scalp is also common.
Solution
Use a shampoo containing 2% ketoconazole and zinc pyrithione to combat dandruff. Wash and condition your hair to get back the sheen. Use an anti-frizz serum if your hair get too curly and avoid using hair mousse, wax and gel because they can acerbate dryness.
