The Festive Firecracker Look You Should Be Sporting Right Now

Have you caught the festive fever yet? The season is upon us, and we all know what the next couple of months will herald – an endless schedule of soirees, parties, weddings and social engagements – which means your beauty game better be on point.
This Diwali, we suggest binning the same old, tired crimson lip and black smoky eye for something soft, feminine and understated. The name of the game? Monochrome makeup.
Focused on drawing different hues from the same palette for your lips, cheeks and eyes, monochrome or ‘matchy matchy’ makeup has graced the streets, screens, runways and red carpets for a while now, and there’s a good reason why. It’s super versatile and easy to match to any outfit or occasion.
Ready to get your #FestiveFace on? Let’s get started!

Here are monochromatic makeup looks:

  1. 1. SULTRY, SMOKY EYES
  2. Start with the eyes, priming your lids with a sturdy base like L'Oreal Paris Base Magique Transforming Smoothing Primer. Give it a few minutes to settle and then add depth with a soft brown, drawn into and along your crease. Then, use a shimmery brown base on your lid like L'Oreal Paris Color Riche La Palette from the inner corners outward, leaving out the outer edges. For the wing, concentrate a deep, dark brown from the same palette into the outer corners. (Don’t forget to blend for a seamless transition!) Now use L'Oreal Paris Infallible Gel Crayon Eyeliner to rim your lids and waterline to perfect the look. Because it’s festive season, you can afford to be a bit extra with your gaze for the afterhours. We’d recommend L'Oreal Paris Volume Million Lashes Mascara - Black for the sultriest gaze in all the land!
Expert Tip: Don’t let raccoon-y under-eyes upstage your smoky eyes. Use trace amounts of orange concealer on your dark circles before you put on your concealer (always in a downward triangle shape). If your concealer tends to crease, lightly press the area down with a tissue split into a single layer.
  3. 2. CHISEL AND GLOW
  4. To keep it soft and feminine, don’t contour – strobe! A healthy glow is just what the doctor ordered this Diwali, but first you have to nail your base. The makeup can’t do it all for you – for a hydrated glow, you need to make sure your skin is hydrated to begin with! Who’d have thunk, right? Use moisturizer, followed by a good hydrating foundation with a matte finish like Nykaa SKINgenius Hydrating and Sculpting Foundation. To cover up darkness under the eyes, make sure to use an under-eye concealer like L.A. Girl Pro Conceal HD, but pick one with peachy undertones.  On your cheeks, dust a matte blush like NYX Professional Makeup Ombre Blush - Strictly Chic, angled upward from the apples of your cheek toward your temples in order to lift and sculpt. Then, the final flourish – a warm peach or gold highlighter applied carefully to the planes on your face that naturally hit the light.  We love Makeup Revolution’s I Heart Makeup Blushing Heart Triple Baked Highlighter, a gorgeous hue for dusky skin tones. Use it to furbish your brow bone, cheekbones, nose and cupid’s bow, making sure to wield with restraint so you don’t end up looking too oily.
Expert Tip: Going to a party involves a whole lot of photos, and the last thing you need is ghostface – an eerie, white cast that shows up in photos. This is usually caused by the wrong foundation or powder. Make sure to stay away from foundations with SPF and swap translucent setting powder with a colored one.

  5. 3. LOW-KEY POWER POUT
  6. Now that the rest of your face is lookin’ flawless, it’s time to perfect your pout. Start with a lip plumper like Smashbox O-Plump Intuitive Lip Plumper so you have a moisty, cushiony base to begin with, and then line those lips with Colorbar Definer Lip Liner for the perfect kissable shape. Since the rest of your face is already #lit, we want to keep it simple here – use a creamy nude or brown matte lipstick like L.A. Girl’s Matte Flat Velvet Lipstick in Snuggle, or Maybelline New York’s Color Sensational Creamy Matte Lipstick in Nude Nuance. Want to go glossier? Try Milani’s Amore Matte Lip Crème in 19 Covet, and voila – you’re all set to knock em dead!
Expert Tip: Bio Oil is a great, natural hydrator for your pout. Before you begin applying your makeup, massage some into your lips, and wipe off with excess tissue for a supple base. If you want your lipstick to last a long night, coat your first application with loose powder, and then apply again.
