I like to use a lighter nude shade in the middle and then line it with a brown lipliner. Would create the perfect ombre and this trick works with colours that actually wash us out. 

Or I mix a darker shade with any lighter shade to create something I am more comfortable with. 

Just avoid orange based reds. Caramine would suit you, so would purples and browns.

Just go for dark matte shades like reds peaches shade like that on any brand

I had the same problem but now I know the solution Just try not to use light coloured lipstick as it will look like some putty put on the lips.You can try the medium ones.Tango also goes well.My favourite is MP7 from lakme9to5 and trust me you will love it.
