How to remove dandruff quickly

Find a solution that works for you

Don’t toss out all those dark colored clothes just yet. Getting rid of dandruff—even the stubborn variety—is easier than you think, once you know what causes dandruff. Nykaa expert Dr Seema explains that dandruff is caused by a yeast-like fungus called malassezia that normally inhabits a healthy human head, feeding on the fatty oils secreted by hair follicles on the scalp. In people suffering from dandruff, the fungus grows uncontrollably, causing irritation and speeding up cell turnover on the scalp from once a month to every fortnight. . This profusion of dead cells mixes with oil from the hair follicles and forms greasy clumps that settle on your hair and shoulders.
Now you must be wondering, how to get rid of dandruff! No worries. Below mentioned are few tips from the expert.

Find the right shampoo

Using anti-dandruff shampoos like L'Oreal Paris Fall Resist Anti-Dandruff Shampoo, Himalaya Herbals Anti-Dandruff Soothing Shampoo, Sebamed Anti-Dandruff Shampoo Ph5.5, Wella Professionals Clean Anti Dandruff Shampoo and Park Avenue Anti Dandruff Beer Shampoo can help you get rid of those unsightly flakes. However, all dandruff control products are not created the same. Different ingredients treat different causes of dandruff. While zinc pyrithione-based shampoos are antibacterial and antifungal, tar–based shampoos contain coal tar that treats seborrheic dermatitis. Other shampoos containing selenium sulfide can also reduce fungus, but they can cause discoloration of chemically-treated hair. Shampoos containing salicylic acid are also effective but can cause excessive scalp dryness. If all else fails, you can try ketoconazole-based anti-fungal shampoos according to Mayo Clinic; these have a stronger formulation than other brands in the market.
Occasionally your doctor may suggest a combination of cortisone and anti-fungal creams if your regular dandruff shampoo doesn’t work. Look for ingredients such as zinc pyrithione, selenium sulfide, salicyclic acid and ketoconazole that treat the fungal infection and decrease the rate of cell turnover.

Shampoo correctly

Ideally you should use two to three different brands of anti-dandruff shampoos for best results. Shampoos tend to become ineffective when the fungus builds up resistance against the active ingredient. Therefore, try rotating three brands of dandruff shampoo by using each brand for a month and then switching to another brand next month and a third brand the month after that, and then back to the first brand.
You should lather twice to get rid of dandruff. The first lathering and rinsing helps get rid of loose flakes and the oily buildup on hair and scalp. The second lathering works on the scalp and its advisable to leave the shampoo in the hair for at least five minutes before rinsing it out. This gives the shampoo a chance to penetrate the skin cells and treat the fungal infection. End with an anti-dandruff conditioner such as Lever Ayush Anti Dandruff Neem Conditioner, Dalan D'Olive Olive Oil Anti Dandruff Conditioner and Brillare Science Intenso Crème Dandruff Control Clarifying Conditioner.
