Buy Best Selling Lip Primers Online at Nykaa

Lip primer is one of those extra steps you notice most when your lipstick usually settles into lines, catches on dry patches or fades sooner than you would like. Nykaa's bestselling lip primers include hydrating, smoothing and matte options from Kay Beauty, M.A.C and PAC, along with a lip oil currently listed in the category.

Best Lip Primers at a Glance

For dry lips: Hydrating formulas that create a smoother base
For matte lipstick: Primers that help soften the look of dry texture
For longer wear: Lip prep designed to help colour stay put
For smoother application: A more even surface before lipstick
For everyday makeup: Transparent formulas that work with different lip colours
For glossy lips: Use a primer underneath gloss when you want smoother-looking lips

What Does Lip Primer Do?

A lip primer is applied before lipstick to prepare the lips and create a smoother base for colour. It can make colour sit more evenly and help reduce the look of fine lines and dry patches.

Some primers are designed to hydrate your lips, others to give a matte finish or to primarily help lip colour last longer. It's a small thing but it can make a difference if you wear matte lipstick or long-wear lipstick often.

Which Lip Primer Should You Choose?

Take a look at the lip products you use most.

Someone who lives in matte lipstick may prefer a smoothing or matte primer. For dry lips, a hydrating formula makes more sense. And when lipstick tends to fade or move during the day, a primer designed around wear can be useful.

A transparent primer is the easiest option if you switch between shades regularly. You can use the same base under a nude lipstick one day and a red the next.

Lip Primer for Dry and Chapped Lips

Matte lipstick has a habit of finding every dry patch on the lips. When the surface is rough, even a good lipstick can look uneven.

A hydrating primer can help create a more comfortable base before colour. Kay Beauty Hydra Seal Lip Primer and PAC Lip Primer are the natural options to consider from the current selection.

Keep the layer light and give it a little time to settle. You want your lipstick to glide over the primer, not sit on top of a thick layer of product.

Lip Primer for Matte Lipstick

There is a reason lip primer is particularly useful with matte lipstick. Matte formulas have less shine to distract from texture, so lines and flaky areas tend to show up more clearly.

PAC Studio Matte Lip Primer is specifically positioned around priming, hydrating and smoothing chapped lips. M.A.C Prep + Prime Lip is another dedicated option for prepping the lips before colour.

Apply just enough to even out the surface. Too much primer can leave the lips slippery and make some matte lipsticks harder to set.

Does Lip Primer Help Lipstick Last Longer?

It can help, but it is not a magic fix for every lipstick.

Some primers are designed to help lip colour stay in place or reduce fading. PAC Lip Primer, for example, is positioned around helping prevent fading. M.A.C Prep + Prime Lip is designed as a prep step before lip colour.

Your lipstick formula still matters. Eating, drinking and oily foods will affect wear, even when you have used a primer underneath.

Lip Primer for Smoother Lipstick Application

Sometimes the biggest benefit is simply how the lipstick goes on.

A smooth base gives a lipstick fewer dry patches to catch on. This is particularly noticeable with matte, liquid and highly pigmented formulas, where an uneven application can be difficult to fix once the colour has set.

Use a small amount of primer across the lips, let it settle and then apply your lipstick. There is no need to build several layers underneath.

Hydrating vs Matte Lip Primer

Hydrating Lip Primer

A better match when your lips regularly feel dry or your lipstick tends to cling to rough areas.

Matte Lip Primer

Makes more sense when you want to smooth the lips without adding a noticeably glossy or moisturised finish underneath matte lipstick.

For someone who owns a mix of lipsticks, a transparent primer is generally the more versatile choice.

Lip Primer vs Lip Balm

Lip balm and lip primer are easy to confuse because both can be used before lipstick.

Lip Balm

Mainly there to soften and moisturise the lips. On a day when your lips are simply dry, balm may be all you need.

Lip Primer

A makeup base designed to prepare the surface for colour. When lipstick application and wear are the bigger concern, it has a more specific role.

Lip Primer vs Lip Liner

They solve two different problems.

Lip Primer

Prepares the surface for an even, smooth base before colour.

Lip Liner

Defines the shape and gives the edges more structure.

You can use both in the same routine. Start with a thin layer of primer, let it settle, then line and fill the lips before applying lipstick.

Can You Use Lip Primer Under Lip Gloss?

Yes. A small amount of primer can be used underneath gloss when you want the lips to look smoother.

Let the primer settle before applying the gloss. This works particularly well when you are wearing a tinted gloss and want the colour to sit more evenly.

If you only want moisture and shine, however, a lip balm or lip oil may be enough. Primer is more useful when you are also wearing lip colour.

How to Apply Lip Primer

Keep the application simple.

Start with clean lips: Remove leftover lipstick and excess balm.
Apply a thin layer: Cover the lips evenly without piling on product.
Wait a moment: Let the primer settle before adding colour.
Line the lips: Use lip liner if you want more definition.
Apply lipstick: Finish with your chosen lip colour.

When your lips are particularly dry, use a little balm first. Let it absorb and remove any excess before applying primer.

Can You Wear Lip Primer Every Day?

Yes, especially if you're a regular wearer of matte or long wearing lipstick.

You don't need a different primer for each makeup look. Its transparent formula makes it easy to layer under any lipstick shade - a staple for your everyday lip care routine.

On days when you are wearing only a comfortable balm or gloss, you may not notice enough of a difference to make the extra step necessary.

Lip Primer for Summer and Humid Weather

Keep your lip prep light during hot and humid weather.

A thin layer of primer is enough before lipstick. Give it time to settle, then apply your lip colour. If your lipstick tends to move around the edges, a matching lip liner can add extra definition.

Tip

Avoid layering balm, oil and primer heavily. Too much slip underneath lipstick can make the colour move rather than stay neat.

Common Lip Primer Mistakes to Avoid

Using a thick layer underneath lipstick
Applying matte lipstick straight over flaky lips
Putting lipstick on before the primer has settled
Layering too much balm or oil underneath a long-wearing formula
Expecting primer alone to make lipstick completely transfer-proof
Applying several lip products without removing excess from the previous layer

Common Questions

Q1: What does lip primer do?

Lip primer prepares the lips before lipstick. It can smooth the look of dry texture and fine lines and help colour apply more evenly.

Q2: Is lip primer good for dry lips?

Yes. A hydrating lip primer can make a more comfortable base when dry or flaky lips make lipstick look uneven.

Q3: Can I use lip primer under matte lipstick?

Yes. It can also be used to make a smoother surface before matte lipstick. First spread a thin layer and let it settle.

Q4: Does lip primer make lipstick last longer?

Some primers are designed to help lip colour stay in place or reduce fading. The lipstick formula, food and drinks will still affect how long the colour lasts.

Q5: Can I use lip balm instead of lip primer?

Yes, when your main concern is dryness. Lip primer is more specifically designed to prepare the lips for makeup.

Q6: Can I use lip primer every day?

Yes. A comfortable, transparent primer can be used regularly, particularly underneath matte or long-wearing lipstick.

Q7: Can I use lip primer under lip gloss?

Yes. Apply a thin layer, let it settle and follow with gloss. This can give the lips a smoother-looking base.

Q8: Is lip primer useful in summer?

It can be, particularly under lipstick. Keep the layer light and avoid applying several slippery products underneath your lip colour.
